THE COVINGTON NEWS, COVINGTON, GEORGIA,
RED CROSS MEETING.
(Left out last week.)
On last Monday afternoon at five
o’clock there was a meeting held at
the Public Library, presided over by
Miss Beatrice Daniells, field secretary
of the nursing department. This meet¬
ing was called to discuss plans for put¬
ting a Red Cross Community nurse
in Newton county for the year, begin¬
ning in January 1921.
Mr. R. P. Lester, chairman of the
Red Cross Work of Newton county,
had instructed Miss Sallie Mae Cook
to appoint on this committee: Mrs.
W. C. Clark, Mrs. E. O. Lee, Mrs. J.
B. Robinson, Mrs. G. C. Adams, Dr.
W. I*. Travis, Dr. Luke Robinson, Dr
A. S. Hopkins and Rev. Walker
Combs. The entire committee was
present except Mrs. E. O. Lee, who
was out of tow’n on this day.
Miss Daniells told of the work of
these nurses, showing how- she could go
from ho use to house, encouraging
every means to bring about better
health conditions, and relieving many
cases where only a trained nurse can
minister. Among her many duties,
slip must visit all the country schools
and assist in the physical examina¬
tion of the pupils and in many cases
.she can flo this work herself, thpn she
can do the follow-up work which is
most important in these cases. Steps
will be taken at once by Miss Daniells
to send a general field worker to Cov¬
ington, who will put the matter not
only to the people of Covington, but
will visit the county districts in the
interest of this cause. On account of
the fair it was thought best by Miss
Daniells and the committee not to have
this field worker here until after fair
week, but the News will keep you
posted about the entire matter.
THE WOMAN’S CLUB
Th e October meeting of the Wo¬
man's Club was held at the residence
of Mrs. O. M. Griffi . The decorations
carried out the idea of "Harvest
Time,” the living room being most at¬
tractive with fali fruits and flowers
Th t , large open fire place was taste¬
fully decorated with fall vegetables
and farm products and might have
been mistaken for a prize section of
Newton County Fair.
There were a larg e number present
to answer the first roll call of the
club year. Reports were heard from
the various committees showing much
work done during th e last year and
much more planned for the coming
year. The Library Committee hope
to furnish the library witli suitable
furniture, the Civic committee have
planned a “Clean Up Day”; the dates
to be announced later and have plans
for a “City Beautiful.” The club has
agreed to attend to the four parks of
the city for the coming year.
The Welfare Committee reported
the examination of 200 school children
in the lower grades of the city schools.
After a short earnest appeal to the
club for more and better work this
year made by the President, Mrs. W.
C. Clark, the meeting was turned over
to the committee on entertainment
with Mrs. J. B. Robinson as chairman,
she gracefully introduced Col. Reuben
Tuck who made an interesting and
instructive address on the legal status
of women as voters and impressed on
the club the “sacred duty of every wo¬
man to vote.” After the address Miss
Wells in her usual charming manner
sang “Good bye to Summer.” her ac¬
companiment being beautifully played
by Miss Adams.
Delicious refreshments consisting of
cream and cake were served by the
following committee:
Mrs. .T B. Robinson. Mrs. C. M
Griffin. Mrs. Lester Lee, Mrs. H. B
Robertson, Mrs. W. R. Stillwell. Mrs.
W. H Gaither, Mrs. J. R Sams, Mrs.
