ST. PATRICK CELEBRATION
BY U. D. C.
The home of Mesdames E. J. Wil¬
liams and J. E. Hutchins is delightful¬
ly adapted for entertaining, and made
an ideal setting for the March meeting
of the U. D. C., on Tuesday.
The volume of business was unus¬
ually heavy, but was dispatched with
admirable celerity by the efficient pres¬
ident, Mrs. W. W. Childs. The min¬
utes, reports on local activities, appro¬
priations for the. Benson Sword Fund
and Richmond Museum passed in swift
array. Committees were appointed for
the observance of Memorial Day on
April 20th.
At the conclusion of the business
session, a program of absorbing interest
was presented. The Chapter was
transported to the Emerald Isle, the
home of minstrelsy and song. The de- i
corations were in harmonious accord.! |
Tables were adorned with runners of
emblematic designs. The shamrock,
l.vre, crowns and o'er it all a green
light stealing, showed that good old
St. Patrick had come into his own:
while legends ages old mingled with the
irrepressible wit of "Happy Hooligan.”
Miss Maud Mobley contributed an
instructive sketch of St. Patrick. Her
voice Is clear and resonant, possessing
a carrying force that was musical as
a silver bell.
Miss Vera Keller’s vocal inter- j
pretation of “The Wearing of the ;
Green,”, possessed all the fervor of a !
genuine Irish colleen. Misses Clara
Belle and Clyde Adams delighted the:
audience with an enchanting piano and .
violin duo, Miss Clara Belle Adams al- ;
so rendered “A Little Bit of Heaven.”
with magical effect. The aceompan- j
invents, under the skilled fingers of i
Miss Grace Wilson, rippled in exquisite j
melody. An instrumental selection of i
of wondrous beauty was contributed
by Miss Wilson. Bits of Irish wit and
humor were read by Miss Sallie Mae
Soekwell: Mesdames H. B. Robertson,
\\\ C. Clarke, -Robt. Webb and Lynda
Lee Bryan. The napkins,, ice cream
and cake, with souvenir shamrocks,
bore out the St. Patrick feature and
were dispensed by the neat-handed
“Phyllises” of the occasion, assisted
by graceful little Miss Sara Clyde
Hutchins. The following were the
hostesses: Mrs. Jack Swann. Mrs. E.
V. Moore, Mrs. Ed. Hutchins, Mrs. C.
