55.9 PERSONS DIE OF
.MALARIA IN GEORGIA IN 1920
This was the fearful toll of human j
lives whi-.-h malaria claimed'In Geor
gia during 1920 according to the
ports made by th$ • physicians and urs-,
del-takers to the Bureau of Vital Stc
tistics’of the State Board of Health.
This is not only a sad condition but
shows cheapness of human life 1 even’
in this highly civilized and. .ohirstian
ized land, since malaria is not only a
preventable condition but can be con¬
trolled for about one tenth of, ttjmt the
people are now paying for the privi- j
lege of being, sick of this disease. ,u \
incident to the death of these 559
persons there were more than one and
a half million wage or working days j
lost on account of sickness from malt
ria. This together with the-, drug bill, I
doctor. hll and funeral catenae, re,,
resents the loss of more than $a,000,
000.00. :
This condition, hpyrever, is by.am |
means hopeless, as this, disease can
be controlled for a small per cent, of
vv hat it is actually costing. I ft deed a
ray of hope is seen in the introduction j
of a bill in the Ijouse of representa-. j
tives by Mr. Vocelle of Camden court -
ty providing for an appropriation ot
$25,000.00 to be used in helpfnk mal t
rious 'immunities to get rid of this
expensive disease."Tf this*'bill passes,
it, no doubt, will be instrumental
the saving of hundreds of-thousands
of dollars and many human lives.

C ONTROL OF TOMATO LEAF RIGHT
"Blight" appears on the leaves of to
mato plants as small, dark brown ch ..
cular spots’, 1-8 to 1-4 inch in diameter
and sometimes on the stems as elongat
ed* spots or streaks. When infection is
the whole leaf area is killed
the fruit does not mature but re
mains small and insipid.
If 'these spots are examined carefullv,
small black dots may be seen partly
embedded in the leaf tissue. These ar -3
the' Spdre-bearing organs of the fungus
which produces the disease. Thousands
of spores are produced in each of these
small structures; and by wind and
these spores are carried to other leaves
where, under proper moisture
turns, each .one ma>_ t pi Odnce q
spot.
The; spore itself - has a thick wall
,« very rm.Unt to tat,
when it germinates it sends out a very
delicate thread-like, structure which is
easily. lOUed by poisons such as ordinary
spray mixtures. This threadlike struc
ture ; .grows very rapidly and, within a
few' hours, passes into the leaf tissue,
From this one can see that in order
r> prevent infection the poison must be
op, the leaf at the time the spore falls
on the leaf. Since the tomato plant is
constantly forming new leaves the
spray must he ap|*liM frequently during
damp rainy weather,
A good spray for this disease is 4-3-50
Bordeaux plus 2 pounds of - whale, oil
soap per 50 gallons—that is % 4 pounds
t-ditper-sulphate, 3 pounds of quick lime,
2 pounds of fish oil soap, and 50 gallons
of water. (Directions for preparation of
Bordeaux mixture , may be fpund In
Georgia Agricultural Experiment Sta¬
tion Bulletin No. 123.)
Make one application While plants are
still in the seed bed. Ordinarily the
pl.ants will not require further spraying
until the latter part of June. They
should then be sprayed three or four
tiims ah intervals of about fifteen days.

MANNERS.
-
Manners are a pleasant deceit—a
conspiracy to rob existence of much
of its crudity. Because of them the
elusive element of charm lingers in
the world and gentler natures are en¬
couraged to their robust growth.
A lot of efficient people, though,
have discarded manners as so much
unnecessary impediments.
