PROHIBITION LAW
Atlanta, Jan. 10.—A greater respect
jj'or the law is an urgent need in Atlanta
Laid in the rest of the south, according
to the court authorities here, both in
.the state and the federal courts.
Extraordinary efforts were made in
many parts of this state, and especially
in the larger towns and cities, to curb
[the sale of the Yuletide liquors and do
away with the many drinking parties
that annually debauch the holiday sea¬
son, hut oilicial reports received since
the beginning of the new year indicate
that the prohibition law was violated
in many places, and in innumerable
rays.
In their eagerness to establish what
they are pleased to call their right to
drink, many people, according to the
court authorities of the state, have cul¬
tivated a contempt for the prohibition
law which, it is asserted, is evidently
leading to a contempt for all law.
The opinion is expressed here that
contempt for the law has caused a great (
army of bootleggers to spring up in j
Georgia, as well as in other states, and
they are reaping a harvest by the re¬
fusal of the citizenship to respect the
prohibition law.
"Unless laws are enforced, they are
worthless,” declares Hon. John A. Boy¬
kin. Mr. Boykin, who is the solicitor
general of the Atlanta Circuit and rec¬
ognized as a prosecutor of rare ability,
'is a terror to evil-doers. It will be re¬
called that he worked for many long
months driving out from Atlanta the
notorious bunco ring, which maintained
national headquarters here.
“Unless men and women have respect j
for the law, and not only obey it them¬
selves, but try to help make others
obey it, a law cannot be enforced,” con¬
tinued Mr. Boykin. “Back of every
law must be public sentiment and a de¬
sire to be law-abiding. Unfortunately a
portion of the public seems to have de¬
veloped a sentiment against law en¬
forcement as it applies to the illegal
sale of liquor, and huve lost their de¬
sire to be law-abiding in regard to pro¬
bation. Tlie tendency is dangerous. It
is a trend that is leading to the general
ignoring of a law that is a part of the
Constitution of the nation, and which
should be as strictly observed as any
law on the statute books.”
