Charley Does His Thing
'Where's Charley?' Hilarious Fun
“The play’s the thing,” Shakespeare said, and it could not be more true of
"Where’s Charley?” now playing at the new Harlequin Dinner Theatre in
Atlanta,
Shakespeare would have been right at home in the setting as the Harle
quin is patterned after the old Globe Theatre of Shakespearean times.
The setting is perfect, the food good but the “play’s the thing” as the
Harlequin resident acting company turns in a flawless performance of the
rollicking musical comedy.
Larry Shue is a tremendous Charley, the Oxford College boy whose
wealthy aunt is to chaperone a college dance, but who fails to show.
Charley's college friends talk him into playing the part of his aunt so the
festivities can go on. The hilarity mounts as two elderly gentlemen seeking
the matrimonial road to wealth decide to court Charley's “aunt.”
Several of the songs are old familiar ones — “The New Ashmolean
Marching Society and Student Conservatory Band,” “My Darling, My
Darling” and “Once in Love with Amy.” Larry Shue’s rendition of the
latter steals the show.
Linday Shue, Larry's wife, plays the lead opposite him as Amy, his
baffled girl friend who can't understand Charley’s frequent disappearances
whenever his aunt appears on the scene. Jack Kyrieleison and Michelle
Mundell are strong in the supporting roles of Charley’s best friend and his
date.
Most of the music is enjoyable. Some numbers don’t add much to the
play, but there is enough action on stage to compensate. At times the
women’s voices are a little weak. The scenery is fantastic and, all told,
“Where's Charley?” is truly delightful entertainment.
The Harlequin Dinner Theatre in Atlanta and one in Washington, D. C.,
each have full-time resident acting companies that will travel between
Atlanta and Washington, D. C. Their performances, if “Where’s Charley?”
is typical, are highly professional.

menu as well as the decor of the theatre.
The meats (roast beef, baked pork chops and chicken breasts in wine
sauce) were excellent, but the vegetables were so-so.
A pot of mulligan stew and home-baked bread is brought to the table to
start off the meal and dinner is followed by a pot of hot wild blackberry
cobbler also brought to the table.

Town on Map
Buena Vista, a picturesque town
of 1,500 in southwestern Georgia,
was featured in a national maga
zine a few years ago as a typical
small town in rural America.
The town's centerpiece is a classic
1850 courthouse with a square.
Here townsfolk and farmers from
nearby areas gather daily to trade
or talk.
Buena Vista’s streets are lined
with trees. Each private house has
plantings of camellias, azaleas, and
yards carefully landscaped. Pecan
orchards border roads leading into
town. Since the economy of the
region is almost entirely agricultu
ral, the natural landscape is
dominated by croplands. These
consist of open areas and afford
motorists interesting views and
vistas.
