already have an active organization.
Georgians for the ERA (GERA) formed
in 1973, after ERA was relegated to
committee. We began as a small group,
with ERA ratification as our only goal. A
coalition of other organizations formed to
support plans for an ERA conference and
march. Coalition members have included
other feminist groups, civil rights
organizations, labor unions, professional
associations, church-affiliated groups, and
student organizations. Coalition members
are often organizations which support
ERA, but have other important goals; by
allying we are able to avoid duplication of
effort and to pool our resources.
In January, 1974, 1,000 women and
men marched in one of the biggest
demonstrations in Atlanta’s history. The
committee’s year-long study produced no
recommendation at all, and ERA was
defeated in the Georgia House, 104-70.
The following year, GERA and the
coalition coordinated march of 1500, and
the Georgia Senate defeated ERA, 22-11.
This year, a “Women in the Art” benefit
drew about 600 ERA supporters in an
August celebration of the anniversary of
Suffrage. More than 300 persons attended

Can’t you file a writ to delay the

By Rev. Ralph Hawkins
“And Jesus went about all the

Synagogues, and preaching the
gospel of the Kingdom, and healing
every sickness and every disease

The question comes to every
person — how do we spend our
God-given days? The late Arnold
Toynee, great English historian,
has made the statement in his
writings that the Christian gospel
in a world religion: that the gospel
of Christ is of such a nature that it
answers the needs of mankind.
Jesus said to his Disciples “Go ye
into all the world and preach the
gospel." Our Lord set the example
by His every day life.
