Rams lose
heartbreaker

How close can a football team
come to winning an important
Region 6AAA football game?
Well, Newton Ram Coach Norm
Olson must be muttering to
himself since his team was beaten
in the final minute and a half of
the game at Tara Stadium
Saturday night by Forest Park,
11-6.
Midway of the first quarter
corner-back Jerome Jeffries picked
off a Forest Park pass at the 46
and returned the ball to the
opponents' 10-yard mark to setup
the Ram score.
Tony Roberts, moved up to the
starting quarterback spot by the
NCCHS coaches, went to work in
maneuvering his team across the
double stripes. He called on
tailback Keith Street on a pit
chout and the Ram sophomore
gained five. Roberts himself kept
the ball on the next play and
made a yard. A pass went astray
and then on fourth and four
Roberts rolled out and scored.
Scott Tankersley had his kick for
the extra point blocked by on
charging linemen.
Newton's offense and defense
looked extremely good in the
game. The Ram ground game
was good for 195 yards with
Mike Nolley and Richard White
gaining 82 and 52 yards
respectively during the encounter.
Nolley, the 196-pound running
back, carried the ball 11 times
and White lugged the leather
nine times.
The Rams’ defense made a
great goal-line stand in the third
period when the Panthers had a
first down on the Newton four.
On the first play Ram end Tony
Dodd threw Joe Malone for a
three-yard loss. QB Cheeves was
then stopped at the five by Bruce
Gheesling. A pass missed its
mark and the Forest Parkers
went for the field goal from the
22 with Bobby Bell hitting the
three points. This score of 6-3
remained until the final minute
and 24 seconds.
QB Roberts, promoted to the
starting lineup during the past
week, ran the ball 15 times and
gained a net of 13 yards in
cluding his TD trek. His pass
completion record was three for
seven. The young QB will be
called upon this week to face the
Jonesboro Cardinal at Sharp
Field Friday night. This will be

Cousins' defense blanks Heritage 8-0
The R. L. Cousins Middle
School Rams rolled to their third
victory of the year against only
one loss by defeating the Heritage
Patriots 8 • 0 Wednesday in
Conyers.
The Rams drove to within
scoring distance several times but
penalties and fumbles killed their
drives until early in the fourth
quarter. Barry Reed drove over
from five yards away for the
games only touchdown and Greg
Cowan passed to Michael Smith
for the points after to give
Cousins all the scoring they
needed.
The game was played on a cool
windy day and the wind turned
out to be quite a factor 1 the
contest. Heritage received the
kickoff and returned it to
midfield. From that point the
Patriots drove 10 yards for the
only first down they would get
until the last minute of play.
On third down and four Cousins
defensive end Mike Smith broke
through to sack the Heritage
passer and force a punt.
From that point the Rams drove
65 yards to the Heritage 5. On

but the Rams were penalized 15
yards for holding. The Rams
were also penalized on the next
three plays to put them safely
out of scoring range with a

To start the second half the
Rams received a short kickoff
and put the ball in play near
midfield. They drove to the six in
nine plays. From there McKnight
scored what appeared to be a
touchdown but another series of
penalites moved the Rams out of
range.
In the fourth period Cousins
again drove the field only to give
the ball up at the one-yard line
on a fumble. However moments
later Tony Horton pounced on a
heritage fumble to set up a Ram
score.
Cousins finally got on the board
when fullback Reed drove over
from the five.
The Cousins defense was superb
in recording their second shutout
of the year. Heritage was able to
gain only 27 yards rushing and
30 yards passing with two first
downs. Michael Smith, Kenny

third Cousins back to gain over

Collier: Scorpion to
Junkyard Dog
ATHENS — From the Satellite
Scorpions to a junkyard dog? For
Steve Collier, the conversion has
been a blitz — literally. The
former Scorp can now boast a
starting position on one of the
nation's top collegiate teams, the
Georgia Bulldogs.
Collier came to Georgia from
Satellite Beach. Florida, and
played as the Bulldog's number
one freshman guard. The follow
ing year, however, he would have
had to compete against some of
the most experienced linemen in
the SEC for a position on the
team. The alternative, a red-shirt
season, was chosen instead, giving
him an extra year's playing time.
“It really helped me a lot,"
Collier stated in reference to his
red-Shirt year. “I got bigger and
it gave me a chance to gain some
experience. Now I'm starting;
that's what's important."

help his team post a 25-12 victory. On this run
late in the second quarter he went over from the
five-yard line.
And with momentum in his
favor. Collier began the '76
season. Facing the California
defense was a tough assignment.
“I had to psyche myself up for
the game," he confessed. “It was
the first starting game of my
collegiate career.”
Until now, Steve’s number one
goal has been “to give 110
percent and to continue starting.”
But with Georgia's victory over
the Crimson Tide, he’s directed
his objectives towards a southern
bowl: “I'd like to see Georgia
play Pittsburgh in the Sugar
Bowl for the national champion
ship.”
Football hasn't always been
Steve's main interest, however, “I
