Following completion of a study
of the license-fee structures of the
11 Western States, game and fish
officials in New Mexico have
come to the conclusion that
hunting and fishing there is a
relative bargain. The study
revealed that the cost of a
resident general hunting and
fishing license in New Mexico
was 42 percent less than the
average price of a similar license
in other Western States ($15.75
compared to a $27 average).

Sports and the lonely people
By Dr. John Earl Raber
North Georgia College
“Look at all the lonely people.
Where do they all come from?”
are the words from a popular
song by Simon and Garfunkel. In
away. however, the words point
up the plight of millions of
people on a daily basis.
As family size gets smaller,
houses get bigger, and when cities
grow to the extent that you don’t
know your nieghbor, there is the
sudden realization of loneliness in
many of us. A loneliness that can
often only be cured by the
nearness of people.
In order to substitute people for
loneliness, you need people and,
what better place to find them
than in the world of sports.
Much can be said about the
negative and positive value of
sports, but when you realize the

benefits of socialization, together
ness, and friends, the scale
weighs heavily on the positive
side.
It might be a pee-wee football
game in a small rural community,
or perhaps a tennis match in the
astrodome. Then again it could
be 60,000 people at a Georgia
football game, or perhaps a soft
ball game in a small Midwestern
town.
Whether it’s for the active
involvement in the many aspects
of sports or just sitting and
watching, sports bring people
together.
The chill of a crisp fall night
might quickly be warmed up
when the people gather at the
local high school football stadium
to cheer. They come not just to
cheer but to see old friends, and
join together in a common cause
of oneness.

The togetherness of people and
sports is one of the beautiful and
perhaps warmest aspects of life.
When people get together to
scream, holler, cry and smile at a
sporting event, it is done in
unison. They have come together
for a common cause, to eliminate
all the lonely people.
