Shooting down
violence
NBC News is preparing a
three-hour special called
“Violence in America” for
prime-time viewing in
January.
The program will explore
and attempt to come to
grips with the different
forms of violence in Ameri
can society. Inter-personal
violence, such as assault,
rape and homicide, will be
examined along with social
violence- race riots, union
battles, political violence.
It will also try to figure
out why America is the most
violent western nation.
NBC News correspondent
Edwin Newman, who
cently acted as moderal
for the first Ford-Carti
debate, will serve ar
anchorman for the special,
which will preempt all of
the network’s prime-time
programming. Also con
tributing to the program
are correspondents Linda
Ellerbee and Carl Stokes.
Meanwhile, the violence
level of NBC’s prime- „.'e
programming has come
under attack from an
unprecedented source —
another network.
CBS has complained to
the Television Authority of
the National Association of
Broadcasters, accusing
NBC of violating the con
troversial “family viewing”
hours (from 7 to 9 p.m.) with
the introduction of Baa Baa
Black Sheep, a new fall
series which appears at 8
o’clock on Tuesday eve
nings.
The series is drawn from
the World War II exploits of
Marine flying ace Pappy
Boyington in the South
Pacific, and those of his
squadron of boozers,
brawlers and fugitives from
courts-martial.
CBS charged the show’s
contents “exploit violence,
glorify excessive drinking
and condone dubious moral
standards” in a time slot
allocated last year for pro
gramming suitable for
children.

of Albert, owner of a small,

love with, not knowing she was pregnant by another
man. In Family, Oct. 26 (10-11 p.m., EDT) on ABC.
NBC replied that CBS was
“shooting from the hip.”
One NBC executive shot
back at CBS’ September 24,
9 p.m., televising of “Mag
num Force," a sequel to
“Dirty Harry” starring Clint
Eastwood. NBC claims to
have rejected it as too
violent even for a 9 p.m.
timeslot.
Critics of the “family
hour” policy adopted last
year by the networks, under
Congressional pressure, say
it has been a failure from
the beginning. “Promptly at
9, all hell breaks loose,"
says one network executive.
The squabble over Baa
Baa Black Sheep will be
judged first by the National
Association of Broadcasters
code authority chief, who
can pass it up to the NAB’s
full Code Review for a rul
ing if he feels it’s necessary.
The Parent-Teacher As
sociation is after all three
networks for the profusion
of violent programming.
Continuing its ongoing
battle with the networks,
the PTA has two new
methods at its disposal this
fall. One is a national rating
system to indicate which TV
programs contain the
greatest amount of violence
-- as well as to identify who
the sponsors are. The other
is a series of public hearings
on TV violence to be held in
eight American cities
through the winter.
While there is still a con
troversy over the degree to
which viewing violence ac
tually contributes toward
individual behavior, the
PTA is distressed by the ro
manticizing of misdeeds to
the point of a general
toleration of violence.
The national president of
the organization, which is 6
million members strong,
says that the PTA’s long
range goal is not to elimi
nate all violence from
television, but rather to
reduce the amount, thereby
depicting “a true, broad
picture of American life.”
