Chickens
ATHENS — Chickens on
"weight-watching" diets lay more
— and larger — eggs.
These are the unexpected research
findings of Dr. Henry L. Fuller,
poultry science professor at the
University of Georgia Agricultural
Experiment Station here.
Pullets whose diets are severely
restricted in both energy and
calories lay more eggs than pullets
fed moderately limited or normal
diets. Also, the restricted-diet
pullets laid more large and extra
large eggs.
Fuller fed two diets to White
Leghorn pullets from six weeks of
age until they began laying eggs.
The moderate diet provided two
thirds of the pullets’ normal caloric
intake, while the severe diet pro
vided less than one-half the usual
calories.
