Chicken manure fuel?
CUMMING — The Georgia Pro
ductivity Center is constructing a
facility near here to convert chicken
manure into synthetic “Natural
gas,” as part of the Center’s re
search to improve productivity in
the poultry industry.
The facility, known as an “aner
obic digestor,” will convert poultry
waste products into quality fertili
zer and feedstock, and generate
methane which can be used as a
supplement for commercial natural
gas.

The facility will be the first of its
kind in the poultry industry, says
John Dawkins, research engineer
for the Center. The research is
funded by the Georgia Department
of Agriculture and is coordinated
by the Georgia Poultry Federation.
The facility is located about 10
miles north of Cumming on a
poultry farm owned by Bobby
Smith of Forsyth County.
Georgia Productivity Center,
located at the Engineering Experi
ment Station at Georgia Tech, was
to begin operational tests of the fa
cility in March. The tests are to
determine which combination of
temperature, pressure and agitation
will yield the most profitable
o[»eration.
The methane generated by the test
facility will eventually be used to
supplement commercial natural
gas. Analysts at the Center say that
when the value of both products
are combined, the operation can
make poultry operations more
efficient and can reduce the pro
blem of waste disposal.
