THE COVINGTON NEWS — THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 4. 1976
Senators Nunn, Stennis
to make NATO study tour
Two members of the Senate
Armed Services Committee will
conduct a two-week survey in No
vember of NATO installations in
Europe, Chairman John C. Stennis
announced today.
Sen. Stennis said the two senators,
Sam Nunn, D-Ga., and Dewey F.
Bartlett, R-Okla., will also meet
with top officials of NATO govern
ments as well as with U.S. officials
there.
“Our Committee is more and
more concerned each year with the
NATO military posture," Senator
Stennis said, "and this survey, by
two of our very able committee
members, should provide informa
tion which will be very valuable
when we consider the annual mili
tary authorization bill next year.
“More than two and one half
years ago, Senator Nunn made a
somewhat similar trip, and, based
in large part on the information he
acquired, the Committee recom
mended, and the Congress enacted,
several amendments which have
been helpful to both the United
States and to NATO. I am glad
these senators have agreed to take
a new look at the NATO forces,”
NOW WE ARE 50
NEW YORK (API - As bears
go, Winnie-The-Pooh, the teddy
with very little brain, is rather old.
He turned 50 this year.
But since Pooh is fictional, he
really is ageless. Pooh was “born"
in 1926 when A.A. Milne's
children’s book, “Winnie-The-
Pooh," was published simultan
eously in Britain and in the United
States.
Milne, a British playwright, drew
inspiration for the front the antics
of his son, Christopher Robin
Milne, and his toy animals.
It and three others — "Now We
Are Six," “When We Were Very
Young,” and "The House At Pooh
Corner” — were published by F.
P. Dutton between 1924 and 1928
and, according to the publisher,
have sold millions of copies over
the years.
Senator Stennis said.
“Lieutenant General James F.
Hollingsworth, now retired after a
distinguished military career, has
agreed to travel with the group as a
consultant,” Senator Stennis said.
“In addition to their NATO visits,
and in the same context, I have
asked Senators Nunn and Bartlett
to make stops in France and in
Spain and meet with officials
there," the Chairman said.
Sen. Nunn said plans for the trip,
which are not yet complete, call for
a session with the NATO Com
mander, Gen. Alexander Haig, in
Brussels. Thereafter stops are sche
duled in Germany, France,
Holland, Italy, Spain and the 6th
Fleet at sea, meeting with officials
and visiting both U.S. and Allied
military units, the Senator said.
