Tax employees get bills ready
Strickland and approved unanimou
sly provides that commercial haulers
who do not pay dumping fees for the
previous month by the 15th of the
following month, be prohibited from
using the landfill. The fee system
was established several weeks ago
that some property owners will be receiving bills
for taxes owed by previous owners of their
property. Under Georgia law. the present proper
ty owner is liable for those taxes when the pre
vious owner cannot be located.
because of the increased use of the
landfill by commercial haulers, in
cluding the city of Covington.
The commissioners got into consid
erable discussion over a check issued
to a tax office employee for the week
of Nov. 27. Acting-chairman A. D.
Walker voiced opposition to pay
ment of the check, saying the em
ployee in question did not work 40
hours and was not eligible for
holiday pay. Walker said he would
consult with the county attorney and
try to obtain a Writ of Mandamus
against the commissioners for allow
ing this to occur.
Comm ; mer Oliver Capes made a
motion that all wages paid to the
employee for hours not worked be
recovered, but the motion died for
lack of a second. Conlihissioner
Strickland said he did not oppose the
motion, but simply wanted to talk to
the tax commissioner before making
a decision.
Commissioner Nelson Allen, whois
authori’ed to sign county checks,
said he signed the particular check in
question because the tax commiss
ioner had signed a statement that the
employee worked 40 hours.
James Cross consulted the board
about the possibility of establishing
and operating a masonry-trade
training school. He was told to check
with the county zoning officer.
'Fhe board also read a letter from
Sen. Don Ballard concerning the
current status of the Washington
Street multi-laning project.
