Leaky roof at NCCHS
Heavy rains over the Thanksgiving weekend in Covington caused
problems with the roof at Newton County Comprehensive High
School. Water leaking through the top of the building caused
considerable damage to ceiling tile and damaged some 4,500
square feet of carpet. Fay Early, administrative assistant at the
Board of Education, says the board is negotiating with the roofer
and architect to see where the responsibility for the leaky roof
lies. He said the board is intent on having those responsible for
the poor roof, which has leaked several times in the past, repair it.
Christmas trees and
fire prevent ion
By Capt. Don Floyd
Covington Fire Dept.
One of the most combustible
decorations is the ordinary
Christmas tree. Fire tests conducted
on spruce, fir, cedar and pine trees
six to seven feet tall demonstrated
that such trees require on the
average thirty-six seconds from time
of ignition to flame out, and that
during ths short period of time
flames up to 23 ft. in height are
generated.
From these tests is can be readily
understood why fires involving
Christmas trees frequently spread so
rapidly to nearby combustibles,
resulting in severe damage or loss of
life. The following general safety
measures are suggested:
1. Obtain a fresh tree. Cut off the
end of the trunk diagonally at least
one inch above the original cut.
Keep tree in a reservoir of water to

Check reservoir daily.
2. Be sure tree is well supported
and so located as to be away from
fireplaces, stoves, T.V. or other
sources of heat.
3. Avoid the use of flammable
decorations.
4. Use only electric lights, and see
that all srings are in good condition.
Electrical devices should be in
spected and comply with the safety
standards of the UN
DERWRITERS
LABORATORIES, INC.
5. Do not leave tree lights burning
when no one is in the house.
6. Keep curtains and other
