Canker sores and fever blisters
Does it seem like fever blisters
and canker sores always visit you
at the most awkward times (like for
holiday parties, weddings and bar
mitzvahs?). Not only are they a
nuisance, the pain is enough to
make you want relief as fast as you
can get it.
Some ways to make you feel
better faster are talked about in a
booklet from the Department of
Health, Education and Welfare.
For a copy of Canker Sores and
Fever Blisters, send 35 cents to the
Consumer Information Center,
Dept. 39E, Pueblo, Colorado

Hanover employees enjoy third annual banquet
Hsnover Wire Cloth held its third
annual company banquet on
Saturday, Nov. 13, 1976 at the
Crest Restaurant. Approximately 75
people (consisting of employees and
their guests) attended the annual
event.
Special guests for the occasion were
the President of Hanover Wire
Cloth, Hanover, Pa., E. B. Frock
and his wife, Becky. Also Vice-
President of Mfg. at Hanover Pa.,
Dan Frock and his wife, Joanne.
Following the invocation given by
Marvin Wells, a delicious prime rib
roast dinner was enjoyed by all.
Marvin was very helpful throughout
the evening assisting with various
activities as well as taking pictures of
the group at random during the
evening.
The highlight of the banquet was
the presentation of service awards to
employees by Clarence Wells,
serving as host, assisted by Nona
Clark serving as hostess for the
event. Service pins were awarded to
the following:
20 Years... Franklin Duke and
Franklin Kitchens;
15 Years...lsom Robinson and
tongue or soft palate, and the
groove at the base of the gums. Al
though the exact cause of canker
sores hasn’t been proven, many
scientists believe they are due to an
allergic reaction. Cankers tend to
appear when a person has gone
through some physical or emotional
stress. A study of a group of uni
versity students revealed that
cankers sores were more likely to
develop during examination periods
then during vacation.
If left untreated, canker sores
usually heal in 10 to 14 days. The
most successful method of treating
them seems to be, under the care of
a dentist or physician, to use a te
tracycline liquid in the mouth, held
for a few minutes and then swal
lowed. Repeating this several times
a day usually relieves pain in 24
hours and allows complete healing
in five to seven days. If the condi
tion is very severe and chronic,
other treatment may be prescribed.
Fever blisters (herpes simplex
viral infection) generally appear at
the outside edge of the lip, but may
also form at the edge of the nostril.
They often follow lowered physical
resistance; an illness, particularly
upper respiratory infection;
trauma; or emotional stress. They
are also associated with tempera
ture increases from illness or too

Each employee that attended
received a souvenir pewter mug
imprinted with the name of the
company and the date of the
banquet. Each lady present received
a lovely corsage of bronze mums and
yellow daisies complimented with
matching satin ribbon.
The final event of the evening was a
door prize drawing handled by
Helen Nash assisted by Jewel
Skelton. Eight door prizes were
awarded to winners as follows:
1. Ray-O-Vac weatherproof
lantern with six volt battery; winner-
Billy Childers;
2. electric scissors with built-in
light 5 self-sharpening stainless steel
blades; winner-Lamar Rutledge;
3. cannon blanket, 100 per cent
acrylic floral design; winner-Jewel
Skelton;
4. digital electric alarm clock with
back lighted read out in plastic
much sun. This disease tends to
run in certain families and proba
bly has some hereditary compon
ent.
Treatment of fever blisters can
include local anesthetics to relieve
pain, antibiotics and ointments.
Fortunately, the sores seldom scar
and usually heal by themselves in a
week or two.
Georgia county agents ready to offer training
ATHENS — County Extension
agents, advisers to farmers for
years, will also be teachers of
farmers this fall.
More than 230 agents have just
completed training that certified
them to use restricted-use pesti
cides. Now they are ready to train
farmers in their counties.
Farmer training will begin in
some counties this week.
The Environmental Protection
Agency (EPA) and the Georgia
Department of Agriculture are re
quiring farmer certification by Oc
tober 21,1977.
Burton R. Evans, entomologist
pesticide applicator training, Uni
versity of Georgia Extension Ser
vice, said the certification is necess
ary in order to use restricted pesti
cides. Evans said EPA has not yet
identified the restricted substances,
but added they likely will include
those highly toxic to man or the
environment.

ATHENS — Don't make fire one
of your Christmas presents.
Cecil Hammond, safety specialist
with the Cooperative Extension
Service, says, “Christmas tree de
corations and lights cause fires every
year in homes across America, often
leading to tragedy.”
For a safe and merry Christmas,
Hammond advises tree decorators to
follow these suggestions for protect
ing trees against fire.
First of all, make sure all lighting
equipment carries the Underwriter's
Laboratories (UL) or Factory
Mutual (FM) label. Unlabelled
materials, domestic and foreign,
often do not meet safety standards.
Be sure the fuse or circuit breaker
on the circuit serving the tree and
other lighting is no more than 15
amperes. Hammond recommends
purchasing cord sets with a fuse in

label.

The United States Congress
authorized the production of the
special 40 percent silver coins

the American Revolution. Congress
further instructed the Mint to make

To help the Mint meet its legislated

Bicentennial silver coin sets easily
available to their customers.
Additionally, in a further departure
from custom, the Bicentennial silver
coin sets are available over-the
counter at Mint outlets at the
Treasury Department in
Washington, D.C., the U.S. Mint at
Philadelphia and Denver and at the
Old Mint in San Francisco.
The Mint has produced the 45
million Bicentennial silver coins
ordered by Congress in both proof
and uncirculated condition and
packaged them in three-piece sets.
The proof set is priced at sl2 per set.
The uncirculated set is $9 per set.
