FROM PAGE ONE Pike County Fire Department will host the Splash Away at the library June 6 at 1 p.m. and Jason Clark from Southern Reptile Rescue will treat the audience to an informative show about snakes June 20 at 5:30 p.m. Pike County Ex tension Office and Farm Bureau will present their educational program ming June 27 at 1 p.m. Library Carnival will offer games, snacks, and drinks July 11 at 5:30 p.m. and musician Sam Wheelock will entertain his listeners with the One Man Concert: A Story and a Song July 18 at 5:30 p.m. Special programming for teens will feature exciting activities picked out, approved and planned by Teen Advi sory Board. The Teen Summer Reading Kick-off Party will include games, music, pizza, wings and prizes, and will take place June 4 at 5:30 p.m. Capture the Flag and other glow-in-the-dark games will be held June 11 at 7:30 p.m. Tiles for Teens will host painting of ceiling tiles June 18 at 5:30 p.m. The painted tiles will be displayed in the Teen Area for all to admire. Get Your Game Face On! will be an hour of exciting minute-to-win- it games that will take place June 25 at 5:30 p.m. Teen Movie Night will show a film picked by Teen Advisory Board July 9 at 5:30 p.m. During Make a Masterpiece at our Teens Sip and Paint, soda will be served while teens create their paint ings July 16 at 5:30 p.m. To conclude teen sum mer reading program, Cooking for Teens will feature some of your deli cious favorites July 23 at 5:30 p.m. These activities require an advance sign ing up, so please register ahead of time! Grown-ups will get to participate in the adven tures of summer read ing as well. Their short reviews of books that they read during June and July will be entered into Adventure Book Re view Contest. Three book reviews will be randomly drawn July 25 at 5 p.m. and will receive a bag of surprises. “The engaging and ever-popular Preschool Story Hour and Toddler Story Hour will continue to take place all sum mer long at their usual times, on Tuesdays and Thursdays, both days at 11 a.m.,” said Baylynn. “The Adventure Begins at Your Library summer reading program will end July 27 when participants of all ages can pick up their prizes. Retired educators discuss scholarship, new officers sworn in Members of the Pike County Retired Educators Association held the last monthly meeting of the 2023-24 school year on April 22 with 26 members pres ent. President Diane Beres called the meet ing to order, followed by Jamie Crawford giving the Devotional. “Sometimes we think we can’t but learn we can,” she shared. Guest speaker Louis Frank Thompkins, Area 8 Director of GREA, spoke on behalf of all the officers of GREA about retirement and all the things that can be accomplished. He officiated the swearing in of officers for the 2023-25 school year, including presi dent Diane Beres, vice president Helen McDe- vitt, recording secre tary Barbara Messer, treasurer Cathy Takle, corresponding secre tary Marsha Graves and photographer Charlotte Gibson. Judy Turpin gave the Treasurer’s report. Bar bara Messer previously posted the minutes to last month’s meeting on PCREA’s e-mail page. Members heard about the PCREA schol arship which is award ed to a student from Pike who is planning to go into the education field. Brenda Mathis reported that a student had been chosen to receive a $1,500 Schol arship from PCREA. Marlie Stephens was awarded the scholar ship at Honors Night on May 7, 2024. “The teachers of Pike County Schools were grateful for cookies PCREA provided on Planning Day, March 29,” said secretary Mar sha Graves. “The mem bers of PCREA baked a beautiful assortment! It is always nice to get a treat!” A reception for retir ing teachers was held on May 14 at the Ninth Grade Academy build ing. A workshop will be held in August. The door prize was won by Marie Reeves. “PCREA thanks Mt. Olive Church for allowing us to use their building for our meetings. And a very special thanks you goes to Cheryl Williamson, secretary of Mt. Olive, for the many kindness es she has shown us. Cheryl will be retiring in May and PCREA wishes her the very best,” said Graves.
