He also received the first ever key to the city of Zebulon and was surprised with the news that his #10 jersey was retired by the Pike County High School Pirates and had been framed for display at the school. SPECIAL PHOTOS Hunter Strickland returned to the MLB this spring to play for the Angels after taking a season off. Hunter Strickland returns to MLB Pike County’s Hunter Strickland, 35, took a year off of Major League Baseball but is currently racking up strikeouts from the Los Angeles Angels’ bullpen. Since his first outing April 8, Strickland has pitched21 innings in 20 games for the Angels so far, racking up 17 strikeouts. “Last year was a bless ing, to be honest with you. 1 went home and it was a really good reset for me. 1 thought 1 was done playing, you know, HUNTER STRICKLAND 1 made peace with it. But there was still some fire burning in there, so we put in the work and here we are,” he said in an early season interview after the Angeles signed him to a minor league contract and invited him to spring training. Strickland has a 2.14 ERA after facing 77 batters and hurling 312 pitches this season. The Braves will travel to play the An gels Aug. 16-18 but the Los Angeles team will not play in Atlanta this season. Local presents at Gordon State College research symposium Gordon State Col lege held its annual Undergraduate Research Symposium (URS) at the Barnesville campus in April, seeing an increase in participation for both podium and poster pre sentations from the URS in 2023. The event annually invites scholarly paper submissions across diverse fields. This year’s symposium saw a 30% increase in participation, featuring nine podium presentations compared to last year’s seven, and eight poster presenta tions compared to six in 2023. “The URS remains an excellent showcase of student scholarly work at GSC,” said Dr. Amanda L.J. As always, 1 am incredibly proud of our students and deeply grateful to the faculty for their dedi cated mentorship.” This year’s podium presentation winner titled, “Virtue Shamed Her: the Trials of Griselda Murray v. the Epistle of Mary Wortley Montagu,” was presented by Sierra Spencer of Lamar County. Runners-up included Elizabeth R. Hill of Pike County on her podium presentation titled, “Feminine Genesis: The Sexes’ Interpreta tions of Eve in British Literature,” and William Shiflett of Henry County on his podium presenta tion titled, “Evaluating the Differences and Strengths of Remote- Control Gliders and Quadcopter Drones.” “This experience would not have been pos sible without my mentor, Dr. David Janssen,” Hill said. “He encouraged me to pursue my interests, and because of him, 1 have been able to use my undergraduate research to create an opportunity to write for Answers in Genesis, my dream job!” Faculty provided research assistance to students by serving as advisors or mentors. “1 encourage all my fellow students to not be afraid to chase your dreams. 1 know 1 was, but 1 have seen that Gordon is the best place to pur sue your passions,” Hill said.
