We therefore fed it

of this, the greatest |Nilitieal rcvolutkwl
ever known to the nation, to sav to you 1
that we have entered the crucial |*crion j
in the history of our great reform move- i
meat in which the greatest caution, ear- |
neat ddilwration and atrict adherence to (
our principles, arc neccaaaiy to pn-servt- [
intact that organization which stands
to-day as the sheet anchor and hope of
millions of wealth producers in the great
battle for the God-given right* of hu
manity. You are congratulated upon
the grrat harmony and unity of senti
ment in regard to the Alliance princi-
|*lc» which prevails within your Inmler*
and ujNiti the fact that a careful canvass
of the subject of this meeting has shown
that |»rarti«*ally the memlicr* of the or
der in these states stand squarely ujion
their demaml*, with the avowed deter
mination of holding devotion to them
above that to any method of actiou, and
that to-day the uuml*er of those who so
endorsed the principlea of the Alliance
is much greater than ever before.
The sentiment also prevails, strong
and uniform, thnt thl* great order aa an
organizathm Is the greatest of all mod
ern forces for the spread of reform edu
cation, and that its work must be perjiet-
uateil and encsiuragisl in this high I
sphere entirely free from any partisan ■
entanglements. The only dangers which j
seem in any way to threaten a lack of
the fullest development ami jirosperitv •
of the order are those which attend the
disposition of a few men and paper* to
publicly criticise aud condemn others
for their method. This is not of suffi
cient extent to damage our order hut it
mars that perfect unity that should pre
vail, aud always injures all concerned,
and t« contrary to the spirit of brotherly
love and forbearance that should prevail.
Another evil which fortunately prevails
only in very few localities, ia the dispo
sition of member to seek political office
at the hands of their brrthren, forget
ting tha. principle «*f Alliance doctrine
which declares that the office should
seek the mau anj not the man the offi
ce. In consideration of these views as
to the situation, the following rules of
action a re suggested as well calculated
to enable the orver to go through the
coming ordeal of fierce political contest
and come out strengthened and j>uri-
tied:
1. Let a spirit of harutouey prevail,
and let unity of action Ik* the rule I*el
none condemn a brother who stand;
squarely by princijde of the order, or
speak in any way di*|taragingly or dis-
reapectfully of* him liecause he may
differ as to the ’licet methods of enforc
ing our principle*. Grant to every
