SENATOR TERRELL’* IDEA.
Valdosta Times. «
Senator Joseph: M. Terrell, who
has been confined to htfc. home in
Atlanta by illness, but who says that
he has Improved wonderfully and
that he expects to return to Con*
gress this week in the very best of
health gave out an Interview In At
lanta on Saturday, which # shows that
Senator Terrell has lost none of
the etrong common sense which has
nlwaya characterised him, and that
his energy Is still Indomitable. In his
statement he discussed a number of
questions to come before congress
and set forth his idea in regard to
Canadian reciprocity in a very clear
manner. He shows that the Cana
dian reciprocity hill will open up a
great market for our cotton seed oil
and other cotton products.
Senator Terrell says there arc
other matters which he wishes*to
tr.ke Up la Washington. when he re
turns; there and talking on this line
he- says;
•'One of these provisions for
extending the world markets for
cmfton goods. Do you know If
we could get every person living
to buy ono cotton skirt a year
we would have . to greatly Ini
crease our yield of the staple
to supply the 'increased de
mand? And yet it should be
eaay to get practically every per
son living to we»r not only one
but several cotton skints each
year. All that la needed Is for
’export markets to be opened up
and developed. Tills cannot be
dope effectually . by the tradq,
but must be dono by the govern
mental agencies. I am looking
into the matter very carefully
and think I shall be able to do
something along that line. If
nothing can be gotten through
congress at the present session
I intend taking the qusetion up
With the*departments In Wash
ington and arguing upon them
the Importance of giving more at
tention to the extending of our
textile trade. Nothing Is more
Important to southern farmers
and business men.
"Another matter that has re
ceived considerable thought and
attention at my hands is agricul
tural education. I can but feel
that the cost of one battlshlp each,
year, amounting to 110,000,000 or'
$12,000,000 could be better expen
ded In he education of tbe young
in the science of agriculture. In
stead yf being spent for battle-,
ships, which laftt only a tew
years."
This last suggestion of Senator
Terrell Is one of the most practical
Ideas we havs seen and It ahowa that
he has splendid ideas as to what his
people really need. A man who goea
to congress or the United 8tatea
senate Imbued wlh he Idea of;doing
something practicable for his peo
ple It worth a car load of.thoae states
men who pose as constitutional law
yers and who spend their time in
quibbling over the verbage of ,rar.
lous and sundry arbitration treaties.
If 8enator Terrell can carry out his
Idea of getting the departments of
Washington Interested tn opening up
