Griffin School Building Is
Demolished Because Of
Objection to Long-Term
Reports yeBterday reached Supt. J.R. Bourn, of the county schools, of
tho destruction during Suturdaynlght of the school Iioubg in the Grif
fin district, near Buskin, w»*st of Waycross. This 1b the district that
has given the county so much trou-ble in recent years and it was about
the Griffin school that D. W. Wynn was struck and knocked down a
flight of steps at the court house last Saturday by George Kickllghter.
It Is reported that the residents of the district who wanted the school
to remuin open two months longer, the throe month term having come to
an end last week, are highly indig-nant over the action taken by parties
opposed to the school remaining open and there is talk of a reward being
offered for information of Saturday night’s affair.
The destruction of the school wastold by Miss Griffin, tho teacher who
has been in charge. She came hereon route to her home.
The building destroyed was a frame structure, and did not coBt
very much. However, Us destrnctionlms stirred the settlement ns nothing
else could have dono and Interestingdevelopments are expected.
One report reaching Waycrossstates that dynamite wns used to de
molish the Griffin school. Those vis-iting tho wrecked building do not
know what was used but are confl-dcnt of one fact and that Is the build
ing was certainly ruined. latst Friday Miss Griffin was told
by Mr. Kickllghter that thoro woutdbc no more school. Tho teacher had
shortly before been told that owingto the funds raised by local taxation
tho school would be continued fortwo months. She wns in Waycross
Saturday when the trouble botweenKIcklighter and Wynn occurred at
the court house. Both men who woro hero Saturday
gave bond for their appearance attho September term of city court.
That tho destruction of the Grlffinschool will be the cause of a thor
ough probe Is certain, and It is notat ail improbable that warrants will
be issued for several persons wlthlnthe next few dayB.
