WIIAT 18 LIFE?
In the last ahalysis nobody
knows, but we do know that it is,
under strict law. Abuse that law
evenslightly, pain results, Irreg
ular living means derangemement
of the organs, resulting in Consti
pation, Headache or Liver trouble
Dr. King’s New Life Pills quick

The Cost of Education,
NY HON. M. B, DENNIN, EATONTON, GA,
“But to establish and main
tain schools for the fullest and
best education of all of our child
ren will cost money ; we are poor
and cannot afford it. It will cost
money ; we are poor, and for that
very reason we must afford it, It
is the only permanent cure for
poverty. Roads and bridges and
water works and factories cost
money. The law is universal;
we must sow if we would reap;
and spare sowing never makes
abundant reaping, Capital must
be invested before dividends can
be declared. It has been shown
beyond doubt that the productive
power of a people is in direct ratio
to the quantity and quality of its
mlll('u(i(lm. liv(:nstn lus n{m'h in
equipment, time and talent to ed
ucate the children of a poor people
us it does to educte the children
of a rich people, and the differ
ence in money cost cannot be
very great, Whatever else we
save in, we must economize here
by being liberal. There is a
withholding that does net lead to
wealth or any kind of prosperity.
“And, after all, cannot a brave
and noble people, industrious and
economical, make from the intel
ligent use of the fertile fields,
mighty forests, inexhaustible
mines, and the power of the
thousands of singing water-falls
of this vast empire, won for us by
our fathers, the few millioss nec
essary to fik. our children for all
that is best in life? We must do
it. Itis our first duty to our
children for whom alone we live,
and in aud through whom we
must live after weare dead. The
wealth we have is theirs—beyond
what we must consume in the
economic relief of the daily needs
of our life. Sooner or later we
must leave it to them; we are on
ly their stewards and guardians.
Shall we invest their money for
them in bonds or brains? i lands
or fife? Shall we leave them mon
ey, orskill to produce money,
and a little of that higher wealth
which can never be measured in
terms of minted coin?
“When we have done our full
duty in providing facilities for the
best education of all of our chil
dren, delevoping the full capacity
of each; when the ‘forgotten
man' Leg been remembered, the
“last waif” housed and redeem
ed, and every hidden talent
brought tohight and vested in
the commerce of life, then shall
we enter into our rightful hen
tage, and the wealth and power,
the glory and honor of a rich and
abundant life shall be ours, or
our children's, beyond what we
can now comprehend,
**And to this end the teachers
above all must give their lives and
persuade the people to give their
wealth, They are the salt, which
must not lose its savor, Their
duty does not end with hearing
the lessons of their classes or the
preparation of lectures on their
particular subjects.””

HABITS IN THE CHILD,
The following is taken from a paper on
Habics and Will by Mis. Theodore W.
Birney in the Delineator for September:
“T'he habits of reverence, gentleness,
courtesy, honesty, courage and patience
like the opposites are absorbed by the
child from those with whom he is most
closely associated. It is in these attri
butes that an ounce of examgle out
weighs a ton of precept. It is a charm
ing custom to lose no opportunity either
in reading fiction or the circumstances
attending on everyday living to express
an enthusiastic appreciation of the good
the noble, beautiful and true, but valu
able beyond and above all discussion of
these virtues is, “I'o be as nearly as we
can what we wish our children to be.”
