THE MONTICELLO NEWS. ESTABLISHED 1881. Prof. Nisbet spent Saturday | and Sunday in Eatonton. ] We have not had the rain usual ly attendant upon court week. We are needing waterworks and street sprinklers about now, Mrs. Mary Elder has as her guest her step-mother, Mrs. Dum ble, of Jackson. Messrs. Tullis, Hightower and Valentine spent Sunday with friends in Jackson. Editor Hayes, of the Mansfield Leader, made us a pleasant call while in town Wednesday. Col. Emerson Holland George, of Madison, was a distinguished visitor to our town this week. Mrs. Mary Steele, an aged and highly respected lady, died at her home near Winfred last Tuesday. Mr. and Mrs. T. S. Malone ar rived from New York Friday after noon and are stopping at the Ma lone House. Capt. W. J. M., Preston, of Broughton, Jasper’s able Repre sentative, has been among the prominent visitors in town this week. - Rev. C. A. Ridley returned Wednesday from Brewton, Ala,, where he conducted a series of meeting in the Baptist church of that city. Mr, S. Cohen spent a day or two in Madison this week where he went to participate in the ob servance Tuesday of the Hebrew Atonement Day. ‘ Mrs. Will Talmadge and Mrs.! Addie Roby left Tuesday as del egates from the Universalist church to attend the annual con vention being held in Canton this? week. | Mr. George Stinson returned Friday from Jacksonville, Fla., where he has been playing ball with the Jacksonville team during the season. He was accompanied home by Mrs, Stinson who has been spending several weeks with Milledgeville relatives. Mr. M. C. Green, who formerly owned the Jones County News, has purchased the Macon Press, a weekly paper published in the in terest of organized labor, and has assumed charge of the same. Mr. Hollis Pope, of the State University, spent Sunday and Monday with homefolks. Mrs. Peurifoy, of Machen, is on a visit to her daughter, Mrs. Kate Kelly, on Forsyth street. Miss Bertha Campbell has a po sition with Mr. J. H. Kelly where she will be pleased 0 have her friends call. Capt. L. W. Robert, of Bruns wick, has been on a visit this week to his parents, Col. and Mrs. F. W. Robert. } Mr. H. C. Hill has moved into the Presbyterian manse and will occupy it for a short time until his house is completed. : Messrs Merrie Ezell and Chip Robert left Monday morning for Atlanta where they go to enter the Technologicai School. | W. Mr. Greer has a position with Mr. Cohen, of that city. Hon. Harvie Jordan returned from Niagara Falls last Monday and is being congratulatod by his numerous friends upon his election to the presidency of the Farmers’ National Congress. | Mr. Lucius Penn, of Bonaire, spent Saturday and Sunday with his parents, Mr. and Mrs, Andrew Penn, returning home Sunday night accompanied by Mrs, Penn and son, who have been on a visit here, Mr, Key P. Greer, of Sanders ville, is in the city with his broth er, Mr, Will Greer. Key is in ‘business in that thriving city and has many friends here who are glad to see him and to hear of his success, i Mrs. Lizzie Mygatt was called to }Athens Sunday on account of the ‘death of her granddaughter, Miss Kate Mygatt, which occurred Sat. ‘urday afternoon. Mrs. Mygatt's ‘many friends here sympathize 'with her in the loss she has sus tained, MONTICELLO, GEORGIA, FRIDAY, OCTOBER 2, 1903. SUPERIOR COURT IS IN SESSION. Civil and Criminal ' Cases are Very Numerous this Term. The fall term of Jasper Super ior Court convened at nine o’clock Monday morning with his honor Judge Gray Lewis on the bench. Judge Lewis is an able and im partial jurist and under his mas ter hand the machinery of justice is moving without a bobble. Solicitor General Pottle is here looking after the interests of the state. Col. Pottle is competent and his promptness and efficiency are eliciting public favor, The grandjury was organized with Mr. E. H. Jordan foreman, a compliment bestowed on a citi zen of sterling worth and integri ty. In his charge to this honor able body, Judge Lewis covered every point of law and impressed upon the jurists the necessity of enforcing the same without fear or favor. Sheriff Wilburn and deputies are preserving order and waiting Rev. Bartlett, of Atlanta, occu pied the pulpit at the Baptist church last Sunday morning and a gain at the evening service. His sermons were very interesting and were greatly enjoyed by the large audience. Mr. Rudisill, who has been as sisting Mr. Patterson at the depot for several weeks, left yesterday for Athens to take assistant agent's place at the Central office. His place here will be filled by Mr, Woods, of Aihens. ' Mrs. Adamsarrived from Eaton ton the first of the week and has charge of the Intermediate classes in the Monticello High School. Mrs. Adams is an excellent teach er and our citizens are delighted ‘that she has accepted the position, ‘She is accompanied by her daugh lter, Miss Lilla Ruth Adams, who has about recovered from a recent attack of illness, Protect your property against storms as well as fire. Stencgrapher Robinson, of Greensboro, is attending court and keeps busy taking down evi dence in the various cases. Watkins, of Jackson, was here Tuesday on business, We learn from the Argus that Dr. Watkins will leave in a few days for Washington City where he will spend six months in the United States College of Veternary Sur gery. Wednesday was opening day at the store of the Benton Supply Company, and the ladies took advantage of the pretty weather and were out in large numbers to see the handsome display of mil linery and dress goods. Miss Hurlock has taken great care in selecting her stock of mil linery this season, and she is de lighted to have the ladies call and see her goods, Moves Post Office. Before you read this article the Monticello Post Office will have been moved from its recent abode to the newly furnished room under the brick hotel. Under the able management of genial Edward Y. Swanson, Esq., and his charming wife, the Monti cello post office has made such a rapid increase in business that it was recently created a presidential office—which is a salaried office. Also it was made an International Money Order Office—which en ables a person to buy an order for any part of the civilized world, The number of lock boxes has been increases to a much larger amount. Mr, Swanson was appointed to the position October 2, 1900—three years today—and since his reign he has made many substantial friends. ~ Mr, Swanson has associated with him as assistant his pleasant wife, who together are among the most ‘popular public officials of our big and growing town, i While in conversation with Mr, ‘Swanson a day or so ago he said: “I make it my aim to treat every one alike. Northeast Georgia Fair, The Central of Georgia Railway Company will run special trains on October 6th, yth, and Bth, from Machen and intermediate points to Athens on account of the North East Georgia I"air to be held in that city October 6th to the roth, Trains are scheduled to leave Machen at 7 a. m., and returning will leave Athens at 6 p, m,, Cen tral time.
