Special Correspondence of The ‘
News. l
Washington, D.C., Oct., 6, 1903,
There is considerable discuss
here over the fact that the pluto
cratic press of the country is es
pecially enamored of the remark
made by Gov. Durbin, of Indiana,
the other day, that,*the man who
violently assails, by word or deed,
the laws of the country such as
ours commits a crime not only of
infamy but of insanity."
The opinion exists here that the
above comes with rather poor
grace from Gov, Durbin, who has
refused to homor the requisition of
the state of Kentucky for one of
the men accused of the murder of
Gov. Goebel, when the law and/
the constitution requires the per- |
petrators of such crimes to be de-|
livered up to justice. Is he hard.
ly a fit man to read lectures on;
what is rightand wrong? It is
admitted that to violently assail a
law that is robbing the people of
the United States, such as thcl
Dingley tariff law, is a crime to
the trust magnates who profit by
it. To denounce the laws in sev
eral states that tax the small
home and the litlle personal prop
erty of the poor man on its full
value, and let the corporations
and the millionaires off with only
paying 20 or 3o per cent, is insan
ity according to Hanna and the
republican leaders in Ohio. To
all such the law of their own mak
ing is too sacred to be tampered
with,and Gov.Durbin only echces
the cry of the trusts and corpora
tions, who, in most cases, have
paid for the unrighteous laws they
hold so sacred. The most of the
laws passed recently have been
passed by republicans, and the
shoe is beginning to pinch when
the people are crying out against
them, and hence the how!l by the
governor of Indiana, who stands
for everything the trusts demand,
If the people of Indiana like that
sort of thing and that sort of gov.
¥ S.COHEN. %
ernor, they may continue to wor
ship their own fetish, and the
thinking people of this country
will draw their own conclusions
concerning the mental condition
of Indiana's population,
There is considerable adverse
comment going on here anent the
attempt of prominent republican
politicians to select the democrat
ic nominee for the presidency
‘next year. Not long ago the
Hon, Shelby M. Cullom, of Illi
nois, United States Senator, came
out in an interview and proclaim
ed that Senator Gorman was the
ideal democrat to nominate for
the presidency by the democrats.
There is no shrewder or more
‘adroit politician in the Congress
of the United States than Mr,
Cullom. He said in that inter
'view that 'l am convinced that
'Gorman has the real welfare of
‘the nation deeply at heart. 1
learned that at the time the Wil-
son tariff measure was up for pas
sage. It was he who saved our
amendments to that bill." The
democrats who have been in this
city in the past few days are
commenting on this statement by
the leading republican from the
state of Illinois, and saying that it
is pretty good democratic policy
to do the things those kind of re
publicans repudiate and not do the
things they advocate. When the
democrats of the country have to
take their nominees from among
the men republicans want to sec
nominatad, then the democracy is
Cnoa pretty bad row of stumps, and
;’ would do well to either repudiate

republican suggestions or else go
into the hands of a receiver. The
nomination of a democrat with the
above indorsement from one of the
leading republicans of the country
wouid place the democracy on the
explaining bench from start to
finish of the campaign., llf the
trusts and the tariff questions are
to be uppermost in the coming
campaign, then the above sugges
tion may give the democrats of the
country some food for thought.
Will you nominate a man whose
