TELEPHONE 34. Friday, November 20, 1903, . e Athens 15 flooded this week with the Baptist convention, | Teddy's appeal to Mark is to pleasc stay at the head of the Re publican party ‘‘just one more time”, and—part from a big wad of “*dough.” The cackling of geese once saved ancient Rome. What will the fowls in Rome, Ga., do when the old vets meet there in 19047— “lay low" and say nothing. And now that dear Atlanta is after pure ‘‘booze.” There are a lot of old topers in Atlanta who envy the man's job who is to be selected to test the liquor. Bishop Turner at the conference of the African Methodist church, at Columbus, advised his hearers to let politics alone, as neither party had a negro plank in its platform, The singers(?) of our country have been pleading, a long long time, for ‘‘Bill Bailey"” to come home. Possibly Bill got mixed up in some of those neck-tie par ties np North and jes’' couldn’t come back, . Fasting for the cure of rheuma tism is a new prescription, A man in one of the Eastern states fasted 51 days for that complaint, and on the fifty-second day, after commencing the treatment, the undertakers got him, The Missouri man who did not believe the Missouri mule would kick certainly had forgotten all about the habits of the animal kiagdom; especially the mule that grows in the great state of *‘Mis soury.” He twisted one's tail and was promptly “cited.” The Cuthbert Leader says: There may not be as much in the selling of a cotton crop as in the raising of it, but the question of marketing is one that concerns all the farmers in this section, and they shauld hear what Hon, Har vie Jordan will say on the subject in Cuthbert on the 2:lst, The idea of Atlanta letting such an old and valuable piece of *‘fur niture” get away from her as did that violin, last week, is more than we can understand. The SISOO valued instrument was cap tured in Savangah, tho', a short time after it had left its sweet home and no doubt was only playing a joke on that dear Atlan ta. ot T e Editor Holder of the Athens Banner is pulling hard for a new hotel, union depot, hospital and a railroad to High Shoals and Cranesville, The success of the North Eastern Fair which was held there in October is mainly due to the Banner's efforts. Whatever Frank gets behind, the enterprising people of Athens help him push to the goal. Success to the quill driver, Captain George M. Napier, of « Monrog, and Hon. T, J. Shackel ford, of Athens, are candidates for Solicitor General of the s Athens district. The race be ‘tween these two gentlemen will ‘be interesting as both are well fitted for the place. Intrue words the centest will be *“‘Greek met Greek” until the ballots have all been cast. | | Politicians are getting in trim !for next year's battle, Many can didates are already practicising the Ikissing art upon wooden babies in ,order that they will not fall short tin their efforts to win the race, while others - have built race ‘tracls that they may train to keep ‘in the lead. John D. Rockfeller, Jr., says the man who charges too much for groceries cannot succeed very long. While Kerosene oil is not on the same list with gréceries, it is sold at almost every grocery store in the country, and possibly the man he had in mind when Imaking the above remark had his groceries on the same list with the products of the Standard Oil Co. and was selling groceries, thinking he was selling oil. It is not an unusual sight to see a farmer drive into our town with three or four bales of cotton on a wagon, the result of a week’s pick- ! ing—sell one or two and store the others—pay up all he owes and goj home with money in his pockets. The short crop hurts them all, but with 11 cents cotton they arc coming out wonderfully and are constantly learning to raise more “hog and hominy” which puts them in better shape. ; We have watched the wagons returning home from our town this fall and very few of them carry the heavy groceries that they did a few years ago. Verily, the farmer has learned the best lesson of his life, to raise at home the things that he can, instead of buy ing them. The small things that can not be raised there are not near so hard to buy, in comparison, ias the heavier articles of groceries are. » - Hon. Harvie Jordan, President of American National Farmers’ Congress, will conduct the Far mers' Institute for the eleventh Senatorial district, in Cuthbert, Ga,, Nov. 20 and 21. He will address the farmers and their wives on subjects, ‘“The Market ing and Distribution of our Farm' Products,” *Diversified Farm Products.” Several other distin guished speakers are expected to be present and will address the meetings. it o Hon. Judson Strickland, of the city of Griffin, has announced that he will be a candidate for the office of prison commissioner, in opposition to Hon, Joe Sid Tur ner, of Eatonton, the present in cumbent. We are of the opinion that the gentleman from Spaulding will have ‘‘a hard row to plough” in his race against the gentleman from Putnam. Hon. J. S. Turner has filled the office with credit to the State as well as to himself and nas many friends throughout Geoer gia who will support him for le election, | The merchants of Jackson cer tainly know how to advertise, The Jackson papers are full of live large advertisements. They area credit to the paper, the people who do the buying, the merchants who advertise and the county at large. Monticello has some of the best mercants in the state of Georgia and they are liberal with their money when it comes to showing the people what they have for sale by advertising., Advertising keeps your county trade at home. We wish them all success, especially those who advertise, ~ Three hundred German fam ilies have been located in Haber sham and Rabun counties, This was accomplished by Industrial Commissioner Gay, of the South. ern railway, Dairying is one of their cheif pursuits, and they are proving to be experts in that call. ing. Very fine butter, milk and cheese are produced on their farms, The Southern Railway is not only a great medium of trans. portation butis a great material developer of the countrye it tra. verses as well, Give Peun Bros. your job work THE MONTICELLO NEWS, FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 20, 1903. We cordially en dorse the following by our contem porary: ““The voters of Jasper could not vote for a more honor able and active representative than Hon, W. J. M, Preston, our pres. ent legislator. This gentleman deservesthe support of his county.” —Macon Evening News. The Covington Enterprise says: “It has been the custom of the custom of the Democratic party to give a second term toits represen tatives. Captain N. C. Carr has made a safe and faithful represen tative of Newton county and has been ever ready to carry, out the wishes of the people, Therefore it would be right to give him an other term.” 'The Monticello News heartily approves of the a bove and we also cordially join in the endorsement.~Macon Evening News. The distribution of field and garden seed by the Department of Agriculture, which begana few weeks ago, will last four months. | About a thousand tons, or a total of 45,000,000 packages, will go to the States and Territories of the Union. Every member of Coun gress is allowed 12,500 packages of garden seeds in five varieties, and 500 packages of flower seeds; all that is necessary for him to do| to get them to his constituents be- | ing for him to file their postofiice. addresses with the department, | when the seeds are shipped to' their destinations. In addition to this, the depart ment itself has an allowance of 700,000 packages which it sends to its correapondents throughout the !country, various State grange as sociations, weather and experi mental stations coming in for ;shares. The recent wholesale destruc tion of seeds about which the de ‘ partment peopleare quite reticent, are said to have been principally cowpeasand beans that had rot ted, A faulty feature of past distri ‘butions which, itis said, will be corrected this year, will avert any more late distributions, such as was the case last year, when many of the consignments reach ed their destinations too late fort use. 'To regulate this, the coun try has been divided into six dis tricts, and seeds will be sent to each ata time in accord with cli- | matic conditions and require ments. Another feature that has been adopted is the exchange of seeds by Congressmen, those hav ing entirely urban constituents be ing allowed to exchange their quota of field and garden seeds for'flower seeds. Special selections of tobacco and cotton seed will be sent to those districts where it is deemed they would most likely flourish, sev enty packages, each containing ne peck of cotton seed and 100 packages of tobacco seed, of five papers each, going to the proper districts, Itis expected that by this method the department will be ableto educate the growers as to the proper seed for certain soils.
