About four hours atterward Mr.,

“It used to take me an hoar to

Clark stood quite straight. *“The

walk,” he added. *‘Betore I could
not read a mewspaper without

Whether this will last or not I

BOLT UFRIGRT SKE DIED.
A Corpsa Sitling Bolt Upright Driven
Threugh MBilledgeville,
A dead negro womau sitting bolt
upright in a carriage was the un—
cauny and unusual picture on the
streets of Milledgeville Saturday
morning. -
The dead woman was a Chatham
county lunatie as lum patient.—
Her nanc is Emmie Hadiings,
The most affecting part of the
picture was another female lunatic
who sat by the side of the dead wo
man totally unconscious that she
touched a corp-e.
It seems that the ordinary of
Chatham county had been absent
for some days, and during bis abs
sence the insane woman grew rapis
dly worse. As soon as he returns
ed she was committed to the asy
lum and the officer started with
her and her companion.
At Ivey station, between Gordon
and Macon, she died. It wasals
together a sad sight,
Hexico cnd the Negrozs.
While certain newspapers and
leaders of public opinion in the
Picdmont region argue that the
negroes are here to stay, and that
the two races must ninke the best
of it. it is a significant faet that the
whites -in the southwe:t -ia the

The New Orleans Times-Demo
crat believes that the ne ro exodus
to Mexico, now just beginuivg,
will Le a big movement. If the
negroes are willing to go acress
the Rio Grande, ana if the Mexican
government is prepared to treat
them well, our southwestern {riends
will be perfectly satisfied. Such
a movement would, of course, be
gradual. Tt would no* take avay
our labor supply all at ooce,
and it would prevent negro conges
tion ir any part of the south. The
receding black wave of mizration
would be tfollywed by a wave of
white immigratior, and the south
would in this way be relieved of
the pressure of the race problem,
There may be something in this
voluntary colun.zation of the ne
eroes in Mexico, butitis not likes
ly that the trausfer of the cotton
planters industry, expected by the
leaders of the movement, will ever
take place. Whether the negro
stays vith usor not, King Cotton

GETTING RID OF A SON-IN-LAW,
A St. Lours Story of Which a New VYork
fian is the Unenviable Kero.
About eighteen months ago, says
the Bt, Louis Globe Democrat, the
daugliter of one of the most promi
nent ?itizcxxs of £t. Louis was mar
ried while on a visit to New York,
The parents were not consulted
about the matt r and knew nothing
of it until after the ceremony had
been performed and the young
couple asked for their b'essing.
The uridegoom was young, haunds
somej apparendy wealthy, and of
unobjdetionable character so far as
could be learned. The bride was
beautifal, well educated, a leador
in the upper sccial civcle. To all
appearances it was a splendid
match, and when the couple ar
rivea here after an exteuded - tour,
society received them with open
arms. and congratulations were
geverally showered upon them, ‘
The father and mother of the bride |
seemed to be well pleased with i
her choice, and pardon for the ses
cret marriaze was freely given, |
For a short time miatters went on
smoothly, and then it wes discov
cred that the bridegroom was pracs
tically penuiless, The father |
made generous contributions from
his owu purse to help the young
man along, but as he showed no
degire to help himselt this source
of revenue was eventually cut off.
The young wifo then went toa city
officinl and with tears in her eyes
asked for a position for ter hus
band. ler petition was granted,
aud for three months their domes
tic life again ran on smoothly, ¢
daughter biing Lern to them durs
ing this period. But the husband
was not inclinad to be industrious.
He avoided work, did not attend to
his duties and was absent from the
ofiice for days at a time. As are~
sult, Lis scrvices were dispensed
witheasd he was again obliged to
appeal to the generosity of his
fathiersinclaw, EFrom this time on
be pussed the larger part of his
time in “pool alley,” spending his
allowance foolishly and making no
attewpt to iniprove his condition.
When paticnee cezsed to he a
virtue the fither-in-law decided to
resort to extreme n eosurcs and get
riid of the obnoxious yourg hus
band. Accordingly he got his
denzhter into 2 room in the upper
story of his residence and locked
her up. When Lis scn-in-l w in

had taken Ler c¢hilland gone to
New York. Two days later the
young man was furnished with a
ticket to the metropolis, but no
money, and he started. As scon
as he was out of sight the duuzhier
was set free and is now living as
bappily as possible under the cirs
cumstances at her father’s house.
The young man, thus turned
adrift, reached New York, and his
wife’s family are confident be will
never be able to carn enough mon
ey toluy a returv dcket, and
fonaly balieve they are rid of him,
for awhile, at 'east.

A BEAUTIFUL PICTURE.
The man who stands upon his
own soil—who {cels that by the laws
of the land in whish he lives, by the
laws of civilized nations, he is the
richtiul and exelusive owner of the
land he tills—is by the constitution
of our nature under a wholezome
wfluence not easily imbibed by any
other source. ile focls, other
things being equal, more strongly
than auother the character of a man
who is the lord of an inanimate
woirld. Of this great and wonder
ful sphere which, fashioned by the
tand of God and upheld by his
power, is rolling through the heav.
cns, a part in his—his fron. the
centre to the sky. Itis the space
on which the generation betore
him moved in its rounds ot duties,
and he feels Limselt conneeted by
a visible livk with those who fols
low him,and to whom be is to transs
mit a home. Perhaps his farm
comes down to liim through Lis fa
thers. They Lave gone to their
last home , but he can trace their
footsteps over the scenes of his
Caily labors. The roof which
shelters him was reared by those to
whom he owes his being. Some
iuteresting domestic tradition is
connected with every inclosure.
The favorite fruit was planted by
his futhe s hand e gported in
hoghood beside the brook which
still winds through the meadows.
Thirough the fields lies the path to
the vill* school of early days.
He still hears from his window the
voicr of the OGabbath bell which
called is father to the house of
God, and nesrathand isthe spot
where, when his time has come he
shall be laid by his children, These
are the feelings of the owners of
the soil. Words cannot paint
them ; gold 2anuot buy them ; they
flow out of the fountains of the
heart, they ere the life springs of a
fresh, healthy and generous nas
tional charaeter.
Poor girl, poor girl, so young, so
fuir,
And doomed to die sosoon ;
The seeds of death are scattered
there,
And long be‘ore life’s noon
The grass will grow upon her
grave:
So friends in sorrow say,
And think vo power in earth can
save
The dear one from decay.
Why do they think and talk like
this? Simply becanse some of the
family have died from scrofulous
poisoning ot the blood, sand they
see indications of'the same taint in
her. Serofula of the Lungs, com
monly ciled Consumption, is a
terrible dizease, and it 18 not to be
wondered at that they dre.d it.
But it can be conquered. The
poison can be driven out of the
blood. The taint can be eliminated
from the system. Dr. Pierce's
Geolden Medical Discovery has
curedt thousands of persons who
were expected to find early graves
because *‘there was scrutufa in the
ramily.” **Golden Medizal Dis

A Youthful Convict.
The most youthful life conviet
ever confined in the Keantucky
penitentiary is Linville Combs.
e was sent there a little over a
year ago from Dreathitt county,
i on ihe charge of murdering his lit
tle sister, an irfant wbout two
vears old. When he first entered
the penitentiary he was more child
(ish and ignorant than he is at press
jent, Leing not quite 11 years old
and smaller and less compactly
built. lis year's confinement has
m.de an improvement in him, both
in his physique and wiud, but his
travk, boyish face and general ap~
pearance of a child make him, in
connection with his horrible crime,
the atwraction for all visitors to the
penitentiary. Ile had never heard
of God nor had any knowledgs of
the nature of his erime, and would
say in answer to the question as to
why he killed his sister, “Well,
my step father told me he'd give
me pair of boots if I did it.” He
gaid in reply to turther intcrroza
tories* “She was walkinz across
the floor when we were alone one
day and I Lit her on the head with
a piece of the steve iron. She fell
in the fire and I hit her again and
threw her in the creek.” Repeated ‘
cfforts to elicit the details bLrought
to light the ignorant innocenze of
the boy in the subsequent discovery
of finding the body. When the
motler and the neighbors tound
the baby in the branch Linville |
ran to the scene and said: “Let |
me fetch her oat; I threw her inl
there,” He brought her to the |
shore, anl ingeniously ralated the
circumstarces of the murder, upov
which he was placed unier arrest,
and on his own confession was
given a life sentence. As there
was no testimony to corroborate
the iustigation ot the crime by any
one, ot course it would have heen
impossible to eonvict the step
father. It is unfortunate, howeoy
er, that such a childish convict
should be compelled, lor want ot nl
state reformatory institation, to
dwell for lite among the o'd and
hardene? criminals of the state
peritentiary.
