How “the Late Heunry W. Grady
Proved The Value of Adver
tising.
Years ago, says the Tribune of
Rome.when Henry W. Grady was
struggling to bring the Rome Com
mercisl into the front ranks, he
cclled one day snd asked the Rouns
saville Brothers for an advertise
meat. Mr J. W. Rounsavilled
replied: *“Why, Grady, nobody
reads your paper, it is of o use to
advertise in it. A happy thousht
suggested itself to Ar Gredy.
He went to his office and wrote
the following advertisment which
appearcd next morning in the
Comurer ial. “Wanted, fitty
cats, i «1.! price for the same.
4 pply 1o slounsaville Brothers ”
Well, the 1 icture that presented
itself at Loursaville corner next

of all rges o 0 sizes, boys of all
tints {rowi the fair-headed youth

boys, freckled-faced-boys, town
Loys and conwtry boys, boys from |
all prrts ot Floyd county, blocked
vp the sidewslk, doorways and
street with bags ‘ull of cats—cats
ot every desciijiion, name and or- I
der—house crts, yvard cats, hm-ni
cats, church cats, fat cats, lean |
cats, honest cats. Well, to make
a long story sncrt,the Bounsavilles 1
told Mr. Grady to reservea col
umn for their advertisment as long
as lis paper continued, and ti.atj
was just what Grady wanted. |
The Georgia Watermellon., t
Those who are amusing them - |
selves touching the Georgia water
melon trust have not given the sub- ]
ject sufficicnt attention to know |
the extent of the watermelon busi~
ness. It is reported that on one
of the railroads leading from Geor
gia northward there are during the
season for melons, which lasts about
eight weeks, ten trains of freight
cars per day loided with melons
for the supply of the citiez of Ken- I
tucky, Indiana, Ohio and Michi
gan, aiad Canada. The Georgia
melen in many respeets beats the
world. It frequently reaches the
weight of from forty to sixty .
pounds and at its best is delicious.
Before the melon is used it should
Le cooled on ice for several hours
8o that the beart may be cold.—
Those who have made a study ot
the melon can tell whether it is
good by the fresh beauty of the I
surface, and by the light, crackling [
sound, when it is pressed. The |
best article is brittle, and the thin, I
delicate shell splits before the knile |
revealing the frosty and erimson
honey within. The stories that I
watermeloas are danzerous food do ’
not apply to the globular beauties
trom G orgia in their peach-bloom I
glory. ‘i he Georgians say, and it |
i 3 discon . ingz, that the very best
melons grov: in the State are se
fragile that {(hay cannot be trans
ported, and that those who would
enjoy the top flowers ot this won
deriul prodact of the sun and
sand mast go where the exquisite
spheres g'isten among the dewy
liaves of the generous vines 'whnm»l
marvelous distitlnent of sweetness
is the duinty dis.inction of a favor
ed lind. We shall not say the
watermel-n trust is designed to de
prive the black boys ot the south
of the most succnlent of their coua
solations, but it does seem to be an
interference with the freedom of
national commercce. History has
not done justice to the watermelon
of Georgia, and commerce ‘ails
where there are long-haul restries
tions that prevent the delivery of
melons by the millions from the
sunlit plains of the imperial state of
the south in the msrkets or Mans
hatten.—Brooklyn Standard.
