DUNTENHOFER AT THE PLOW.
The Story of a Sandersville Man’s
Rise to Riches,
A party ot gentlemen were con
versing in front of the IHotel Sand
ersvillea few evenings ago, carrys
ing on running conversation aboutl
men and events. They were calle
ing uplittle reminiscences of the past,
when one of them remarked:
“Years ago just after the close oi
the war, I remember there lived iu
this county a man who, every day,
walked between the handles tilling
his little farm for a livelihood, con
tented and serene, seemingly careless
and unmindful ot the hard life he
daily led. By hisreliows he was not
accredited with any unusual degree
of business tact, nor was it the case
that bis judgement in matters of fia
ance was sought by any ot his ac
quaintances. It he was overly
shrewd no one knew it. If he antici
pated any successful achievement hes
yound the sphere in which he moved,
he did not let any one know of this
latent ambition that fired his brain.
Fivally he drifted away from these
parts. Atfirst he went to Savannah.
Soon after he reached that city, having
m :de a favorable impression on alady
who had some mesaus and who assiss
ted him in pecuniary matters, he
beeame associated with John 1.. Mar
tin in the cotton commn.ission business.
In that he prospered tairly well, and
eventually married his benefactress.
Retiring trom the cotton trade, he
went to New York some time in the
’7os. There he struck in, it seems,
with the magicians of the finance in
the great metropolis, and prosperity
has beamed on him every since.
“At the last annual election of
stockholders of the Central railroad
in Savannah, General Alexander,
the president, voted by proxy 3,700
shares of the stock, the property of
Adam Duntenhofer, of New York,
and that wesonly a meager portion
ot his accumulations. The Adam
Duntenhofer that lived in pinched
circumstances in this county
years ago, is now the same Duntenhio
fer that is accounted atwcst, if not en
d¢irely, a millionare in the most popus
leus and wealthiest city in the union.
His wile, sofar as a rapid money
making goes, is a marvelous success,
and yet it is but the Listory of other
men. From the bottom he has riseu
and worked his way through adverse
circumstances to a position of security
and ease. Itisall in the man fIl(-l"
all.V- Sandersvilie Progiess.
The Oid Adam.
It is told of a gond old fashioned
parson in one of the hill towns of
western Massachusetts that he gave
the tollowing advice to his son, who
was about to come to New York to
hegin a bucioess caréer: “My son, of
course it is always wicked to fight,
and as a christian mivister I must
warn you sagainst it. But at the
same time it you should find yourself
i a fight--mind, I say find yourselt
in a fight, with no way out—always
see that the right man is whipped.”
*Bat, father,” replied the lad, “how
shall I knowwho is the right man?”
“ 'he other man of course,” said the
old gentleman. “In every crisis of
lite something must be taken for
granted, and in a fight you must al
ways assume that the other fellow
deserves to be thrashed.” This ad
vice, simular in spirit to that given
by Skakespeare, indicates that there
may be a good deal of unregener.te
human nature ever in a quiet country
parson.
Disgusted With A Loctor,
I contracted a severe case of Blood
Poison in 1883, and my physicians
put me under a mercurial treatment
of 3 months without doing me sny
good, in fact I was graduaally grow

physician, who tried me with potash
and sarsalparilla, but with no better
result. then became diszusted with
doctors and their remedies, and com
