Bv E. L. RAINEY,
OFFICIAL ORGAN OF THE COUNTY.
DAWSON, MAY, 13r1H, 1891.
PresIDENT HARRISON is still jaunts
ing in the West.
Tue Frorma legislature is still
vainly trying to elect a U. S, Senator. \
Senator Call hasa clear majority and
ghould be given the place. ;
Omlo is the latest state—the twens
ty-fourth—to adopt a ballot-reform
law. Georgia ought to follow Obio
and make the twenty-fifth.
Ruping, the Italian minister, is‘
very augry. In the late tursle with
Mr. Blaine he slipped up on a banana
peel and spilt his plate of maccaroni.
It is estimated that the cotton
acreige in Georgia is 10 per cent. less
than last year. The stand is said to
average only 40 per cent, and the crop
is considered two weeks late.
It is rumered that the deal between
the Columbus Southern the Quitman
and Tan:pa roads, by which the for
mer is to connect at Quitman with
the latter, has been consummated.
ON the 4th. of July next the flag of
the Union will sport forty-three stars.
Room will be wade on the nationai
eusign for the nev State of Wyo
ming.
TaE Ruilroad Commission of Geor
gia has nctified railroads in Georgia
to adjust their treighc rates so as not
to discriminate agaivst local or inter
mediate points. They are to do so
by the 26th instant.
AUSTRI A AND WEST ViRCINIA.
Advice from Vienna state ibat
notice has been given in the reichsrath
to the goverument of the alleged ill:
treatment of svhjects ot AustriasHun.
gary in West Virginia. It is claimed
that these subjects are treated as
slaves, and the government will be
asked what measures it will take to
obtain redress.
The matter referred to is the case
of seventy-five Bohemians who were
hired in New York to work on the
extension of the Norfolk and \Ves
tern. It is said that these men igno
rantly sigaed an ironclad contract,
and when they arrived at Pocahontus
they were put under guard, and ron
dowa by blood hounds when they at~
tempted to escape. The charge is al
-80 made that they were overworked
and halfsstarved.
It is not a settled fact that these
foreigners are in the sitnation de-~
scribed, but admitting the charges to
be true, what can Austria do about
it? Our expecience with Italy has
madae it sufficiently plain that our ted |
eral treaties with forei.n powers are
very largely modified by the dual nu~
ture of our system of government.
Austria will waste time and labor
in celling the sttention. of Secretary
Blaine to this real or imaginary viola
tion of treaty obligations. Our sec
retary will simply reply that the Uni- |
ted States as a government has not“
illtreated the subjects of Austria, and |
that the vietims must look to thol
courts of West Virginia for redress, |
All that the federal authorities prom- \
ise in a treaty is that the foregners
in this country shall bave the sa:m’i
protection that we give our own cili-‘\
zeus. in sowe locnlities American
laborers bave been harshly and une!
Jurtly treated, Lut they had to rest
satisfied with such justice as they could |
obtein trom the courts. Foreigners
are on the same footing. We cannot
be expected to guarantee them privie
leges aud protective sateguards not
eujoyed by our own people.
ENORMOUS TAXATION.
A .
For the next two years our govern
ment will spend annually more than
$500,000.000.
To pay one year's expensesof the
government it will take nearly the
combined wheat and oat crop.
Our annual output of gold, silver,
copper, iron, coal, petroleum and lead
will not foot our tax bill for twelve
months,
Nor can we do it with a year's pro
duct of cotten, wool, rye, barley, wine
potatoes and tobacco.
The combined capitalization of
our nationa! banks is $599,000,009.
Oune year's taxes will nearly swallow
it up.
Now, all this is the federal tax.
We have also to pay city, county and
state taxes.
We pretend to be a nation of plain
people, with no aristocracy, no prins
ces, no standinz army and no expen
‘sive frills, and yat our taxes are more
“enormous than those of Austria, Ger.
many or Great Britain.
- Whea we calmly zonsider these
facts wnd fizures it must be admitted
i that the outlcok is not very encours
‘aging. But such evils always lead
lto a reaction. The people will be
forced by stern necessity to demand
retorm or revolution, and in a coun.
try like ourssuch a state of public
sentiment is boand to crystalize into
reform.
ABOLISh JURY EXZMPTIONS,
The Columbus Enquirer Sun is of
the opinion that the summer session
of the Geor -in legislature will pres
gent a fine opportunity for some mwem.
ber to do a great publicservice by dos
ing aawy Wwith a erying evil in the
laws relating to the administration ot
justice in this State. Let him iutro
duce a bill repcaling and abolishirg
all jury excwptivns, The law is
such now that in every community
many of the most intellizent, upright
and successtul ecitizeus are relieved
from juiy service. Tne time has come
in Georgia, as it has in other States,
when the services of this class of eiti
zens are iuperatively needed in the
jury box. in every couutyin Geor
gia jury cxemptions have grown to
he a great evil, and the demand is
increasing, from the beuch and from
the people. for relief. To further
such a movement we would not ap
peal to any class prejudice, but it is
tair and proper to call attention to
the fact that these exemprions operate
mainly in favor of leading citizens of
towns and cities. Our farmer friends
aie not favored to any great extent
in these special privileges. They are
called from their farm work to go to
town and do the public service from
which so many city men are excused.
This is not right, and it is certainly
not in the interest of public justice.
A law should be passed abolishing
all jury exemptions, and vesting in
the disceimination of the judges iv
‘each case the excusing of jurors, oo
‘the ground of age, illness, peculiar
oceupation, urgent business, or other
conditions wkich might appeal to the
court.

THE IDEAL COMMUNITY. i
A perfect town is that in which ’
you see the farmer patromzing the
bome merchants, the laborers spend
ing the money they earn with their
own tradesmen, and all animated by
a spirit that will not purchase artis
cles abroad if they can be bought at
home. The spirit of reciprocity be
tween man and the mechanic, tradess
mau and Jaborer, farmer and
manutacturer lesults every time in
-making the town a perfect one to do

It Is Remarkable
With what promptness Aver's Cherry Pectoral stops a distressing cough, soothes the
brritated membrane, aud induces refreshing sleep. As an anodyne for soreness of the
lungs, especially when hemorrhage or other consumptive symptoms have manifested them
selves —and alse as an expectorant, Ayer's Cherry Pectoral is unsurpassed.
“I have used Ayer’s Cherry Pectoral in my
practice since 1853, and have always found it re
linle for the cure of colds, coughs, and all lung
diseases.” 8. Haynes, M. D., Saranae, N. Y.
“For twenty years, during autumn and winter,
I had a bad cough. Last October it was much
worse, being attended with hemorrhage of the
lings, so that part of the time, 1 had to keep my
bed. Being advised to try Aver's Chorry Pee
toral, T began to use it, and by the widdle of
March, having taken ghout four bottles of the
medicine, my cough was cured,”— Henry Kesser,
Millington, Tenu.
* Six years ago, while a traveling salesman,
I was suffering from lung trouble. For months
I was unable to sleep in any restful posture. I
had frequent conghing and choking spells, and
was often compelied to seek the open air for
rellef. T was induced to try Ayer's Cherry
Pectoral, which immediately helped me. llts
eoniinued uso has enthrely cured me, and I
believe bas saved my life.”"—Alonzo ¥'. Daggett,
