~ THE bighest tax ever known in
Georgia, in a time of peace, comes at,|
an awkwerd time--when the people!
are least able to bear it.
THE Bavannah authorities know
how to handle a strike. Armed mobs
are not allowed to intimidate people
who want to work, in Georgia.

THE most creditable trade paper
we have yet seen issued from a coun

week. Editor Pendleton ’s ever at
work in the interest of Valdosta, and
he and his paper desérve much at the
hands of the people of that town.
TrE Waycross Herald, one of the
ablest and brightest papers in the
state, has reduced its size. Editor
Russell has evidently been publishing
an eight page paper in a tfour page

~ The legielature has passed a bill tor
an amendment to the constitution
making the session of the legislature
annual and limiting said session to
fifty days. This bill wasintroduced
by Mr. Wheeler, of Walker, who has
been a member of the General Assem

somewhat familiar with the amount of
legitimate business which is likely to
come before it and the time required
to properly and intelligently dispose

ABOUT A COTTON FACTORY.
Mesers. A. Rosenberger & Co., of
the Brighton Mills, manutacturers of
cotton and woolen goods, Fifth street
and Columbi» avenue, Philadelphia,
are looking for* a southern location
for their mill, with a view to forming
a stock company to employ 200 hands.
—Manufacturers’ Record,
Bome months ago the enterprising
business men of Dawson were con
sidering the incorporation of a com
pany to engage in cotton manufactur
ing, but of late interest in the project
seems to have been lost.
Tue News reproduces the item
from the Manutacturers’ Record with
the hope that it will be the means of
reviving interest in the matter and
lead toresults that would mean much
for the prosperity of Dawson. Bits
uated a 8 we are in the heart of the
cotton section, and with cheap labor
and ample transportation tacilities,
there is Lo reason why such an en
terprise would not prove profitable

the spinning of cotton yarns. There
are many of these fuctories in the
south, especially in I rth Carolina,
of limited capital, and without excep-~

such an iodustry in our midst would
materially aid in the steady progress
of Dawson, and would give employ
ment to a considerable number of
that class of people who in other
branches find it impossible to gey
work.
IT IS WRONG.
Tue NEws is opposed to the issuing
of licenses to itinerant peddlers who
come in and temporurily disturb the
trade of the community. Our mer
chants who live here and pay taxes
year after year ought to be protected
in their business. They are part ot
the community, they help build up its
interests, and its welfare to a very
large degree depends upen them. It
the public was very largely benefitted
by a contrary course it might be
considered, for the greatest good to
the greatest number ought to be the
motto of every government, but to
suppose that itinerant peddlers, with

suppose a thing coutrary to all the

Political Points, ‘
The Atlanta Constitution announces
that Representative Bush, of Miiler, will
be in the race for solicitor-general of this
circuit next year. Solicitor Griggs will
‘be a candidate for re-election,
~ —The Constitution also publishes the
following item in speaking of congres
sional polities: There is President
Mitchell, of Thomas, whose friends are
urging him to make the race in the sec
oud, and he will perhaps get there. He
and Judge Guerry and Colonel C. B.
Wooten will have ascramble for the hon
ors.
—lt now appears that Judge J. H.
Guerry will be Colonel Wooten’s
most formidable opponent in the con
gressional race. Heisone of Georgia's
most gifted sons, and would ably repre
sent the second district, Next to Colo
nel Wooten he is our man.—Calhour
