SHE SMOKFD CIGARETTES.
ALICE MITCHELL WROTE LOVE LET
TERS AND SMOKED.
The Question of the Girl’'s Sanity Will be
Developed Within a Day or
Two at the Most.
MeMpuls, TENN, July 20.—1 n the
Mitchell case Robert Mitchell resumed
the stand this morning. He continued
the reading of letters to Alice from her
victim. The last letter was written only
a week before the tragedy while Freda
was on her last visit to Memphis and
while under the interdiction of her
friends from communicating with Alice.
This showed Freda to be as much
DEVOTED TO ALICE A 8 EVER.
She assured her of her undying love
and said she hated her brother-in.law,
Will Volkmar, like poison coming be
tween them. A memoranda feund in
Alice’s possesrion indicated that the was
seeking employment according to her
plan of supporting Freda after their
marrirge. There were copies of the ad
dress for agent by True & Co., of Au
gusta, Me., and others of like character.
The witness testified that he thought
his sister did not yet realize her deed, or
that Freda was dead, as she alwaysspoke
of her
IN THE THIRD PERSON.
Then the witness was turned over to
the state’s attorney for cross-examina
tion. He identified a number of letiers
in his sister’s writing, one written to
Freda on hearing that she was in love
with a young man named Ashley Rozell.
It was full of passionate jealously. *Oh,
if I could only see you I could squeeze
you,’’ she wrote, and then reproaching
her for being unfaithful, she solcmnly
assured her that she would kill Ashley
before he should have Freda. She had
gone so far as to price pistols the day be
fore she said she was deterred only be
cause those she saw were too large and
the price, $l2, was
MORE THAN SHE COULD AFFORD,
She stated over and over that she was
mad with jealously, pleaded with Freda
to be true to her and ended with expres
sims of undying love.
A number of such love-sick letters
were read from both girls to each other,
and one of value to the state, written
two days before the killing, showed
some temper ou Alice’s part, as she told
Freda if she wrote again she would send
the letter to her sister. She said she
had heard a lot of scandal and wanted to
hear no more of it. Then in contraven
tion of the state’'s theory that Alice had
no use for men, a number of letters were
read, written by her to unknown male
correspondents at Carlton, Texas, and
Pittsburg, a. These correspondents she
and her associates had obtained by an
swering advertisements.
They were of the usual type, some of
them of a very affectionate nature and
adddressed to
“‘SWEETHEART'' AND ‘‘DEAR BIRD.”
It developed this morning, for the first
time, that Alice was a cigarette fiend; a
grocer Jiving near her father testifying
to supplying her with them and to fre
quently seeing her smoke them.
The sensation of the day was the intro
duction of Lillie Johnson, who stands
jointly indicted with Alice Mitcheil for
murder on the witness stand. She retold
the story of the murder and of Alice
confiding to her her intention of marry
ing Freda Ward and denied all knowledge
of Alice’s purpose on the day of the
murder.
Court adjourned with her on the stand.
She will be cross-examined to-morrow.
While testifying Lillie broke down in
tears and sobs and could mot proceed, as
she recalled the tragedy, and she had to
be assisted from the stand.

% ANOTHER ENOCH ARDEN.
‘ He Returns after Twenty Years and Mar
| ries His Wife.
A case involved in considerable ro
‘mance has just come to light in Amkherst
N. S., which threatened to outrival the
story of Enoch Arden.
- In 1371, Rebecca Hicks, of Sackville,
married Michael Cahill. For a few years
their married life was quiet and unevent
ful, except in the birth of one child—a
‘boy—until the husband, who followed
‘the sea, decided to return to the occupa
tion, and did so. The birth of another
‘son occurred three months after his de
| parture.
~ On leaving home, Cahill made over to
‘his wife half his pay, which she contin
‘ued to receive for some time, and then it
stopped. Subsequently she heard that
he had heen drowned at sea, and for
seven years she heard nothing to the
contrary. :
At the end of that time she again en
tered the bonds of matrimony, this time
with a George Betts, of Point de Bute.
After being married three years he died,
leaving his widow with two other chil
dren, a boy and a girl.
Some time after her second marriage
a rumor spre: d about that her first hus
band was not dead, but was visiting
Sackville. The report was not confirm
ed, and it being so indefinite and not
hearing from him she conciuded that it
was false.
After the dgath of her second husband
she moved to the states as a dressmaker,
bnt subsequently returned to the coun
try, and finally settled down at Amhx,
where she has remained ever since.
For over ten years, until Tuesday last,
nothing whatever was heard of Cahill,
he having been away from home for
twenty years. On thatday Cahill returned
to Amherst, expectigg to find his wife
dead. He heard, however, of her where
abouts, and a reconciliation was soon
made, he having accumulated considera
ble wealth during his absence. He con
sented to start his married life over again
with the addition of Bett’s two chilaren
to his household.
Blow Your Nose. :
Alas, too often an admonition of a
wmother to her child. The poor innocent
has probably inherited catarrh and is
not responsible for its sore and filthy
nostrils Did you know that tender,
soft, thin, skin lining the nostrils, called
the mucous membrane, extends all over
the body. Every organ in the system, |
and every orifice at the surface has this
thin delicate lining as a protector. So
you see what aix the body is thrown
into when the mucous membrane be
comes irritated and inflamed by constant
friction with poisonous matter in the
blood. Catarrh, leucorhear, aud piles
result freqnently fiom this condition of
affairs. These diseases are mere symp
toms of impoverished blood. Now B. B.
B. or Botanic Blood Balm, will, by en
riching the blood, cause all such symp
toms to disappear.
Henry Reeves, Shellman, Ga., writes:
**Any man or woman who is suffering
from piles and will not use Botanic
Blood Balm is a fool, and it takes me to
tell them so, 1 suffered two years with
bleeding piles, and B. B. relieved me at
once,*! |
J, J. Hardy, Toccoa, Ga., writes: “B
B. B. is a quick cure for catarrh. Three
bottles cured me. Ihad been troubled
several years. ‘¢
James W. Lancaster, Hawkinsville,
Ga., writes: ‘“My wife was in bad health
for eight years. Five doctors and as
many or more different patent medicines
bad done her no good. Six bottles of B.
B. B. has cured her.* |
Had Enough of Law.
A gentleman who is now general super
intendent of a great raiiroad vegan life
by trying to practice law in a Missouri
village. One of his firs. cases wes before
his father, who was a justice of the
peace. After a stormy wrangle between
the young man and his adversary, the
old gentleman decided the case against
his son’s client. The young man gave
vent to some expressions of indignation,
gathered up his books and started to
leave the room. His father pushed his
specs on to his forehead and began mild
ly to lecture him, saying:
‘“Young man, do you expect to rtake
your living practicing Jaw?”’
The son, who had by this time reached
the door, shouted back, as he retired
from the field:
“Not before such a blamed fool court
as this.”
He abandoned the law and engaged in
railroading with great sucress.—Green

A DESPERATE CRIMINAL,
A Many Times Murderer Who Will Froba
bly Hang.
Macox, GaA., July 22.—The dungeon
at police headquarters holds a megro
who. if all the charges against him be
proven, is one of the worst scoundrels
unhung.
Will Redding, alias Will Lewis, was
arrested some time ago by city detective
Jenkins. At the time of the arrest he
gave some trouble and nearly escaped
after knocking the officer down.
He was held up, however, and the
local papers gave a thrilling account of
the chase ana capture of this man
whom they said was charged with larce
ny.
But Bill Redding was charged with
murder, and not only one murder, but
two, one of which is one of the foulest
and most cowardly in the annals of
crime. Last fall the newspapers of the
state were full of the account of the
murder of a jew peddler at Unadilla.
The murdered man’s body was found
in a lonely wood, where his assailant had
left him with a gaping gunshot wound
in his head and his pack and pockets
empty of their contents. Suspicion
pointed to anegro who was seen crossing
the fi:lds to head off the peddler, and
who had purchased cartridges at a
country store evidently for the purpose.
A negro was also seen in the act of dry
ing a npmber of bills at afire in the
woods, and it was known that the ped
dler had about $6O in bills on his person
shortly before he was killed. Rewards
amounting to about $6OO were offered,
the Jewish community in Macon and
Atlanta offering a fair sum and the Gov
ernor offering $l5O.
Detectives Patterson and Jenkins of
‘the Macon police force took the matter
up and have carefullv followed every clew
until, at last it would seem that they
have wound a chain round Redding alias
Le wis, from which he will find it diffi
cult to eseape.
He it was who was seen drying the
bills at the fire 1n the woods. He it was
who bought the powder, the cartridges
and the shot, the number of which cor
responds exactly with the shot in the
fence rail near which the body of the
murdered peddler was found.
Redding has confessed the murder tojhis
partner, and that partner is now safely
locked up in jail. |
He has also confessed to the murder of
a negro near Jacksonville, Fla., about
six months ago, and in this case the clev
er detectives have_got the dead wood on |
him. ‘
There are a few minor charges against
Redding, such as robbing a store in 1
Crawford county and a few small cases
of burglary, but it is not at all probable
that he will live long enough to serve
out any sentence on this account
He will hang. |
