e——————————————— ———
President Cleveland’s *‘rules,” announ
ed from time to time, don’t please every
body, but, so far, they are mighty good
ones, all the same,.
Leonidas Livingston, 85 the story
goes, has been trying to make trouble be
tween Colquitt and Gordon by carrying
tales from ome to the other. Lon has
caused lots of trouble in this world.
Dividing his time between Ta nmany
lore, politics at Washington and affairs
in the pugilistic arena, Richard Croker
is a very busy man at present, Great
ness comes high, but the indomitable
Dick must have it.
Only last year there was a cry all over
Georgia, rising in a degree almost to a
howl, about the frequency and demorali
zation of elections. Now a few Georgia
cities want to hold elections for postmas
ters. There are not only enough, but
certainly too many elections now.
The voters of the country and the po
litical machines are at odds on the gues
tion of ballot reform. The voters waata
secret ball t, a fair couni, and a system
that should as nearly as possible insure
fair play. These things are prec'sely
what the manipulators of polities do not
want. Gradually the masses are getting
the better of the machine.
Senator D, B. Hill has consented to ad
dress the demoeratic society of Washing
ton at Tacoma next fall, and itis inti
mated that the trip will mark the begin
ning of Mr. Hill's presidential boom for
1886. Is not David B. starting rather
early with his boom?
Considerable stir has been produced
by Tostmaster-General DBissell in his
declaration that no man conducting
any other business shall get a postofiice
appoin“ment; but it was decided that
they could not hold Hut against the ed
itors, and they were not barred.
A citizen of Jackson, Mich., the other
day, wrote a message on the baek of a
Columbian postage stamp and mailed it.
The postmaster is greatly perplexed, as,
althouzh a message 2an be forwarded on
a 1 cent postal card he does not think it
lawful for a letter to be sent through
the mails written on the back of a stamp,
A Chinese banker, Han Quay, is stat
ed to be worth the almost inconceivable
sun of 31,750,000,000. A great number
of *he largest banks in the Chinese Em
pire are believed to be under bhis control,
and if his stated wealth be a fact he is
unquestionably the richest man in the
world, -ays the Yankee Blade.
The New York Sun Fas dropped onto
Stanhope Sams, and insists on veferring
to him by the cacophonous appellation
of Potsdam. Now the Sun has Hoke
fmith, Dink Botts, Pod jDismuke and
Stanhope Potsdam Sams to handle, and
it is safe to say that by the time it gets
through with them they will all be fa
mous. The Sun is doing a great work
for these Georgians,
The public generally will be satisfied
to have the postoffices filled by appoint
ment in the usual way, and will object
to being dragged to the polls to decide
between the claims of rival candidates.
Besides, there is very little room for
doubt that the offices will be filled in the
usual way during the preseat admintstra
tion. The people have delegated the us
uil powers to Mr. Cleveland, and the
bFave confidence that he will nse them
honestly and wisely. {
The report recently gained some circu
laiion that Governor Northen would be
tendered the presidency of Mercer col
lege at Macon. Im answer to inquiries
the governor makes the statement that
he would not be able t) accept the posi
tion if it were tendered, which would
seem to indicate that he has other plans
after the expiration of his gubernatorial
term, and it is surmised that the next
sepatorial race is more or less intimately
connected with one of the plans.
A few days ago we stood talkiag with a
gentleman from another county,when he
suddenly said: “I tell you one thing tha;
our coun'y 1s ahead of yours in.”” **What
is it?” we asked. ¢‘Stock,” jhe replied,
‘‘we have the finest stock in the state.”
we turned him over to one of our enter
prising stock men, and met him a few
hours Tater and asked him how he liked
our stock. He said, ‘“You beat us a little
bit”’ and he told the truth. There is
not a eounty in Georg*athat can compare
with Terrell in farm animals,
SCRAMBLING FOR OFFICE,
Every Man For Himself and a Live Time
It Is.
A special from Washington says the
pressure exerted by congressmen at the
white house for appointments has devel
oped into a scramble. At first, congres
sional delegations were in a measure
united. They would agree as a whole
upon some appointments and the entire
delegation would endorse the applicant.
The president has effectually disinte
arated the delegation endorsement sys
tem, and now each man is going in for
himself and pushing his individual
friends.
One result which the president has
and which was his design, is the Dbreak
ing up of ring politics in delegations.
Patronage which has heretofore been
considered the sacred property of sen
ators—for instance, the selection of
marshals and district attorneys—is now
declared free for all and the humble
member of the lower house, or a group
of private citizens may present the names
of candidates with some degree of hope
of their success, Congressional delega
tions do not come to the white house
together now, but the members drop in
alone and render their own solos.

. New Argument Against Corsets.
This
is the
shapeof
a woman's waist, :
on which a corset tight
is laced, The ribs deformed
by being squeezed, press
on the lungs, till they're }
diseased. The heart i
is jammed and |
cannot pump;
the 'liver
' is a
tor
pid lump;
the stomach,
crushed, cannot
digest; and in a mess
all are compressed. There
fore, Ythis silly woman grows to
be a. fearful -mass -of’ woes,
but thinks she has a lovely
shape, though hideous
as a crippled ape.
This is
a woman’s
naturzl waist,
which corset never
yet disgraced. Inside it
is a mine of health. Outside
of charms it has a wealth.
It is a thing ot beauty
true, and a sweet joy
forever new, It i
needs no artful
padding vile
or bustle big to ‘
give it ‘‘style.”
It's strong and solid,
plum @nd sound, and
hard -to get one arm
arouand.” Alas! if .women
only knew the mischief that
these corsets do, they'd let
Dame nature have her
way, and never try her
waist to *‘stay.”

The esteemed Atlanta Herald, in dis
cussing the Altnta postmastership,
reaches th.e conclusion that neither Sen
ator Colquitt ner Congressman Livings
ton will have much voice in the appoint
ment. It says: ‘lf Livinston were. .to
carry back a petitiona m:le long it would
not amount o a rap, for Livington is not
a member of the family and eats ata
side table—when .he eats atjall.”” The
‘Herald thinks Senator Colquitt ‘‘lost his
grip on Cleaveland by predicting that
election day with Grover would be a
funeral occasion.”” The Tleraid seems 1o
hiwe a suspicion that Senator (rordon
has the persimmon pole.
TLree days is a ve'y short time in
which to cure a bad case of the rheuma
tism; but it can be done, if the proper
treatment is adopted, as will be seen by
the following from James Lambert, of
New Brunswick, Ills.: “I was badiy af
flicted with rheumatism in the hips and
legs, when 1 bought a bottle of C.aam
berlain’s Pain Balm. It cured me in
three days. 1 am all right today; an
wou'd insist on every one who is afflictz i |
with that terrible disease to use Cham
berlain’s Pain Balm and get well at
once.”” 50 cent boitles for sale by Farrar

A Postmistress in Trouble. |
Unrequitec love and a lack of a bot
tle of mucilage are responsible for the ‘
downfall of a Missouri postmistress, says
the Savannah News. She was a love
lorn maiden in charge of a fifth class
postoffice, and it became her official duty i
every daythe mail left to forward to her
hated rival a letter from the sciiiol
teacher they both loved. Frequentiy ti:e
fortunate girl remarked to her lover that
the alleged kisses with which he sealed i
flaps of the envelope had a peculiar
odor, as if the white of an egg, which
finally led to a little detective work on
the part of the swain, and the final ar
rest of the poscmistress on the charge of
opening the lotters of the lovers. = And
she confessed, not omitting to state that
she opened the letters because she
couldn’t overcome her curiosity to know
what the man she loved was saying to
her rival. She blames her discovery up
on the fact that the postotfice could not
afford a bottle of mucilage. which neces
sitaced the use of the white of an egg to
reseal the tender missives.
The )lmi'orn Way
“ommends itself to the well-informed,
to do pleasantly and effectually what was
formerly done in the crudest manner and
disagreeable as well. To cleanse the
system and break up colds, headaches
and fevers without unpleasant after eifect

Syrup of Figs.
