FIRE AT RICHLAND.
Narrow Escape of a Family--Other Notes
of Interest.
RicHLAND, GA., July 20.- This morn
ing about 1 o’clock the citizens of our
quiet town were aroused by the cry of
fire. Mayor T. F. Carter’s residence was
on fire, and so soundly did the family
sleep that the neighbors had to arouse
them. The house, a very handsome
struzture, was entirely destroyed, with a
good portion of the furniture. Loss is be
tween $2,000 and $2,500, which is pretty
well covered by insurance. The cause
of the fire is not known.
Sheriff Holder came over from Lump
kin one day this week and arrested J. W.
Hamlin, a white blacksmith of this place.
Hamlin is one of the burglars who was
in with Lucius Johnson, captured in
Niclholson & Williams’ store a week or so
ago. This makes two who are now in
jail for this offense, and they are not all
in yet. It seemsthat a gang of no ac
count white men has existed right in
our midst, whose villainy and nefarious
habits would put cuffee to shame.
Buck Henderson, colored, was leaving
Richland on Tuesday, driving a two-mule
team, and while attempting to cross the
Savannah, Americus and Montgomery
railroad track was struck by the east
bound passenger, killing both mules,
completely demolishing the wagon, and
seriously injuring the old man.

The New Railroad.
Little as people may think about it,
the railroad from Dawson to Bluffton, or
from Dawson to Morgan, is in a fair way
to be built. Considerable effort isjbeing
made to carry it out to Morgan, and
thence via Williamsburg or Arlington
to Colquitt, while the Bluffton people are
still working to have it go thai way.
Of course we wish it to come via Bluft
ton to Blakely.—Early County News.

A Deal in Dirt.
Mr. J. A. Horsley, Dawson’s hustling
real estate agent, has sold the residence
on Lee street occupied by Mr. W. S. Do
zier to Mr. W. P. McArthur for $1,600.
Mr. McArthur, who is a prominent
citizen of Bluffton, will move to Dawson.
A Great Slaughter of Birds,
A party of Dawsonites went down be
low Dover, the other day, and killed
about 1,000 doves, perhaps the greatest
.slaughter ot birds in one day known in
the history of the county. A feature of
the occasion was a fine barbecue,
A Gt:od Run.
" Buck Janes and Goode Guerry rode
from Dawson to Bronwood, a distance of
seven miles, in 28 minutes one day last
week. Can any one tell us what fright
ened Buck and Goode?

Sweet Potatoes.
The ‘‘first bale man” is a very numer

years come Mr. P. T. Smith markets
the first sweet potatoes, and this year is
no exception, as he was in town with a
quantity of fine ones Saturday. As he
has always done for a number of years,
he remembered THE NEwS with some

Mr. Russell Makes Himself Ridiculous.
From the Calhoun Courier.
Congressman Russell spent three days
in Worth county during his recent ab
sence from his post of duty, and made a
speech at Poulan. He is quoted by the
Local as declaring himself ‘‘for the free‘
and unlimited eoinage of silver, abso
lutely, as soon as some wizard or
philosopher or any one else could devise
means by which a dollarof silver, or
of iron, or of paper, would represent one
hundred cents in every man’s pocket.”
That was truly a statesmanic(?) deliver
ance on the silver question.
