T 0 BREAK JAIL.
THAT'S WHAT SOME PRISONERS
TRIED TO DO.
Only a Few Wooden Posts Between Them
and Liberty--Timely Arrival of
Sheriff Christie.
Thursday aftern~on an attempt was
made to break jail that was almost suc
cessful. Within, in prison bounds, were
three n>groes who longed for liberty and
free sunshine. These were Frank Walk
er, Homer Brown and Henry Wigginos.
Walker is the negro under arrest for
shooting and seriously wounding Joe S.
Wheelery at account of which was pub
lished last week.
A note to Sheriff Christie fror Mr. Joe
Greer informed the sheriff whar was go
ing on amongst the prisoners. Hasten
ing to the jail, Sheriff Christie arrived
just in time to frustrate the plan so
neatly arranged. :
In the hallway the iron bar that encir
cles the jail just under the groof had been
torn off; and in.ls-or 20 minutes time the
prisoners could have saw:d through the
wo den posts that still kept them from
freedom. But the sheriff's arrival broke
up the game. i :
The new jail can’t come too quickly.

the Joint Picnic. The Pleasure
Seekers Scafiter.
Up to last Weduesday night, after the
'report of the committee on picnics, it
i was vnderstood that the day- would be
‘spentin Amaricas. A report that a
‘negro was to be hanged there on Friday
resalted in the calling off of the trip to
that city. This was regretted, because
it was understood that some preparations
had been made by the citizzas of Amer
icus to eatertain us. Ti: brass band
had beep employed, committees arranged
to meet us, and a speaker invited by
Mayor Cuits to deliyer an address to the
visitors.
In piace of the joint picnic about one
hundred people went on an excuarsion to
Columbus, some joined another picnic
piwty at Notchaway, and a large crowd
united and spent the day in the woods
near the city.
From 21l sections comes the report of
a delightful time, and lots of sport. The .
day was an ideal cne for a picnic, and |
old and young alike enjoyed it to the
hichest degree. € |
The dty schools had no session Fri
day b order to permit the teachers and
pupils of the school to attend the various
pleasure parties.
