A Pleasant Neighborhood Picnic,
On last Saturday there was an enjoy
able picnic at the home of Mr. W. S.
Marshall, about six miles north of Daw
son, by the people of that community.
About 150 people were present, and it is
safe to say that a pleasanter day was
never spent anywhere. The dinner was
never excelled on any like occasion, and
there were iced refreshments in abun
dance. THE NEws man had a cor
dial invitation to be present, and very
much regrets that circumstances on that
day were such that it was impossible for
him to meet and mingle with these good
people. A friend of THE NEws, who en-
Joyed the good things of the occasion,
sends us the following note:
“On the 4th day of July the communi
ty around Uncle Wond Marshall’s met
and had a nice picnic. Lemonade was
seryed free to the ecrowd. It was got
ten up by Aunt Susan Bridges and Mrs,
M. Marshall. Everybody seemed to en
joy it. The little folks had a swing and
ran foot races. The old folks' (men) talk
ed free silver and the boys and girls talk
ed loveallday. Youought to have been
there to eat ham and chicken and pork
and pi‘ -, and other good things too te
dious to mention. There was enough
left to feed as many more.”

A Horse Burned to Death.
Hon. D. R. Stewart, of Randolph, was
in the city Saturday. He told TuE
NEws that the report that the barn at
his home place, together with a fine
horse and a large quantity of provender,
had been burned was a mistake. A
horse and stable on a farm operated by
a negro tenant were burned, and the ex
aggeratcd report grew from this. Mr.
Stewart says the fire was the work of an
incendiary.

A Business Change.
On Saturday there wasa change in the

retired and was succeeded by Mr. R. L.

ton, as will be seen by a notice elsewhei e
in THE NEws. Mr. Owens has located
in Americus, where he will conduct a
brokerage business. We wish all of
these clever gentlemen success.
