THE SLAUGHTER UF THE MINERS.
The awful occurrence at Hazelton,
Penn., Friday, in which sixty miners
were shot down by a sherift and his
deputies while marching along a pub
lic highway, cannot but spread conster
nation and sorrow all over this land.
No condemnation can be too strong for
the abuse of the rights of the courts
that has led up to the shooting down of
these men, This should be the death
knell of government by injunction.
The press and the people of the coun
try will demand in no uncertain tones
that justice be done. 'T'he authority of
the wicked sheritf, who in anger fgave
the order to fire and murdered so many
men, was not an authority thatin jus
tice should be granted or in justice
should be exercised. The responsibili
ty for the heap of dead who lie in Ha
zelton is with the courts that issued in
junctions applied for by the coal barons
and operators in order that they might
the better coerce the poverty-stricken
miners to return to their slavery at
starvation wages.
Sery A s
T axe has been hifted against the
state pension appropriation, and it is
said that at the next sitting of the leg
islature the work of cutting off some
of the dead limbs will begin. 'T'he pen
sion appropriation for all classes has
reached the enormous sum of $580,000
per annum, and there arenot yet sufli
cient loaves and fishes for all to be fed.
Sudicious application of the pruning
knife will be approved by the veterans
themselves who really need help and
the taxpayers. Conservative members
of the legislature are beginning to
pause and consider the question, for
unless the flood gates are closed taxa
tion for pensions alone will become
burdensome,.
Hox. TroMas E. Warsox gets off
this good one at the expense of Great
Britian: Great Britian is the leading
christian nation of the world. It is,
officially and historically, the favored
follower of the meek and 'lowly Jesus,
In all her temples the Reautiful doc
frine is taught that we must return
good for evil, and that being [smitten
upon one cheek we must turn the other,
At this blessed moment Great Britian
has six great wars on her hands, and is
grabbing land and slaying the natives
in almost every juarter of the globe, If
Great Britian were not so ravenously
religious she wonld be considered the
most monstrously wicked empire the
world has seen since Rome fell,
SoMe planters 1n Marion county
have met and, after pledging them
selves by resolution to turn all of the
cotton of that county to Colum
bus, have swelled that town’s re
ceipts eight bales. Eight bales in a
Jump is more prosperity than one town ‘
can well stand. Columbus should show
her appreciation, and do something
handsome for these people.
SOME papers are indulging in a lot of
rot about the Constitution lowering
the price of cotton. What ability bas
the Constitution to lower the price of
cotton more than other papers have to
raise it? The Constitution is a very
shitty sheet, indeed, but 1t ecan’t do
near as many things as some affect to
believe,
SENATOR Bacox has been invited by
the Hawaiian government to vizit the
islands at its expense, the government
offering to pay the cost of the
trip both going and coming. Senator
Bacon opposes the scheme to annex
the islands to the United States, and
declined the invitation with thanks.
THE Constitution says it 15 ‘bruited
about in political circles that Colonel
Leonidas Livingston will shake off his
congressional desires and line up with
the candidates for governor, If the
Conyers congressman does get in the
gubernatorial game there vwill be 5o
dull timesin Georgia,
ToE farmers are not buying as much
as they usually do at this season of the
’ Year. While there are many things
thep desire and need they have learned
the necessity of making both ends
meet. The gold standard 1s extremely
exacting,
. Tre Constitution and the governor
are still shedding copious tears of sym
pathy for the poor convicted skin play
ers and chicken thieves. There is a
growing suspicion that there is some
thing behind all this ranting about the
state’s conviets,
Tae Constitution and Telegraph are
engaged in the pastime of calling each
other a liar. Just which one is lying
oftener and harder on the other is a
g matter that is open for settlement.
Tue agricultural department is tag
ged at last. Commissioner Nesbitt let
the contract for 3,ooo,ooo4fertilizer tags
toa New York firm Saturday at 45
cents per thousand.
Dawsox is more than sustaining her
reputation this season as one of the
leading markets of the state. Cotton
is coming in and goods of all kinds are
going out,
SEVERAL hundred bales of cotton by
wagon daily show that Dawson is
proudly maintaining her place in the
front rank of commercial centers,
WHEN a man tampers with another
man’s wife in the north they get an
injunction. In Georgia they get asix

ATLANTA’S SWELL SET.
One of the Leaders Waltzes With 2 Black=
berry Blonde at a Negro Ball.
The Atlanta Looking Glass gives this
brilliant description of one of the recent
escapades of shme of Atlanta’s swell se':
“One of Atlanta’s well-known young
society men is just now the subject of a
good deal of quiet chaffing among his
male acquaintances, and is in mortal ter
ror lest a certain story reach his lady
friends. Itseems that one night not
long ago he was out witha trio of
friends on adyenture bent, and chanced
to bring up at a well-known ‘down-town
hall,” where a dance was in progress,
given under the auspices ¢f the members
of the colored industrial order. The
party of prowlers bad dined not wise
ly but too well, and were in a mood for
alark. Accordingly they bought tick- |
ets and filed in, finding themselves in the
midst of a large and decidedly odorifer
ous assemblage. At ope end of the room ‘
a band was seated on a raised platform,
and just as the visitors entered the air
was split with the notes of a poepular
waltz. The hero of my yarn, who was
carrying a trifle more of a ‘load’ than his
companions and felt proportiorately
funnier, decided £ try a few rounds him
self, ard securing « chocolate ediored
charmer, who weighed somewhere in the
neighborhood of a couple of buudred,
dashed with her into tge mazy whirl.
He bears the reputation, out Peachtree
way, of being the best dancar in the Cap
ital City Club, and on this occasion he
more than sustained his laurels, Fired
by the cheers of the admiring throng, he
embellished his steps with ornate flour
ishes and impromptu pigeon wings, all
of which was received with the greatest
entbusiasm. When he stopped at last
and released his gasping and voluptous
partner an ebony-hued gent, wearing an
enormouns floor manager’s badge, rushed
up and escorted him to the platform. He
was too dazed for the moment to resist,
and before he realized what was up he
was being presented with a silver medal
as the ‘gracefulest walzer’ in the house.
This unlcoked for honor chimed in
with his merry mcod and he replied ina
flowery speech that was cheered to the
ccho. All hands insisted in offering
‘their congratulati ns, and it was some
time before he could make his escape,
bearing his trophy proudly on his breast.
Next day be was horrified to see the ac
count of the affair in the papers, but as
there was nothing in it to indicate that
the prize winner was white it was some
time before he was identified as the
’lucky man, He has returned the medal
and swears the stury will ruin him as a
‘german leader.”

A Remarkable Case Before the Morgan

ATLANTA, Sept. 11—The grand jury

A Mad Dog anda Mounster Snake Killed.
News and Personal Notes,
PARRoOTT, Sept, 13. —There haye been
about 550 bales of cotton stored here to
this time, and our ginneries are runzning
almost day and pight. Mr. Lee’'s ma
chinery has been stopped for several
days from a deficiency in the water
supply, but he has now an ample supply
and will put in good time hereafter.
Mr, W. W, Kirksey killed a moccasin
snake about four feet in length, eighteen
inches in circumference and whose fangs
were an inch long, We are notin the
habit of giving much credence to snake
stories in general, but we believe every
word of this because Mr. Kirksey is not
given to exaggeration and is too cool
and brave a man to suffer the excitement
of a battle with a snake to mislead him.
Prof. H. A. Ferrell of Sasser came up
Saturday on a visit to Professor Crowell,
Mr. Crowell hasknown him from infancy
and says Sasser is fortunate in securing
him to teach for her, and that she will
feel justly proud of him, both as a gentle
man and a teacher. We hope Sasser will
give him a full school anl a fair test.
Ouar school opencd with a fair attend
ance, but will grow considerably in the
next two weeks. A good many farmers
ave getting alive to the education of
their children and will start them this
week. They are pleased with the school
and we expect a large attendance.
Rev. W. C. Wade preached usa most
excellent sermon on Saturday. On Sun
day he received and baptized an appli
caut into the church, read and explained
the rules of the Methodist ckurch, and
then administered the sacrament of the
Lord’ssupper.
Mrs. Tilley will open a nice millinery
store this week and will keep a fine as
soriment of all goods generally kept in
such an establishment. This is another
new enterprise and fills a want long felt
by the ladies.
The wife of Houser Atkinson, a
worthy colored farmer, aied near Parrott
a few days ago. Houser Atkinson, al
though a colored man, has the respect of
all who know him and the sympathy of
many friends,
Mr. Gene Pinkston killed a dog sup
posed to be mad. The dog had bitten
several other dogs and exhibited signs
of rabies,
Mrs. John Foreman and daughter,
Miss Camilla, of Mitchell county, are vis
iting friends here.
Dr. Dozier of Sasser visited our town
this week op important business.
Miss Carter of Americus is visiting the
family of Mr. James Whaley.

NOTES ABOUT OUR NEIGHBORS,
Owing to the large amount of cotton
which is now open in the fields and the
apprehensions of a wind-driven rain,
which would greatly damage it, several
tarmers in Dougherty county are taking
advantace of the bright light of the har
vest moon and having their hands pick
cotton at vight,
An effort is being made for a dispensa
ry at Blakely. A meeting has been held
there ana the movement gotten under
headway. Judge Graham, the knightly
geutleman and popular citizen of Ft,
Gaines, was present and told what the
dizpensary had done for that town,
Cuathbert, encouraged by the success
of Dawson, is going to ask the railroad
commission for cheaper freight rates.
Dawson has one advantage over Cuth
bert in the matter of freight rates—two
railway lines,
Twenty-five bales of cotton burned at
the Georgia and Alabama railway cot
ton platform at Richland on Tuesday.
It is supposed that a spark from an en
gine set it on fire, as aa engine had just
passed.

FORTY PEOPLE KILLED,
Passenger and Freight Trains Collide With
Terrible Results.
NEWCASTLE, CoL., Sept. 10. —Just be
fore 1 o’clock this morning *here occur
red the most disastrous railroad wreck
ever known in Colorado. It happened
about a mile and a balf west of this city
on the Denver and Rio Grande road.
A westbound passenger train collided
with a stock train going east, wrecking
both engines and several cars in both
trains,
Shortly after the collision fire broke
out in the ruins. The mail, baggage
and express cars, smoker, day coach and
a tourist sleeper were burned. A number
of passengers who were not killed cut
right, but who were pinned in the wreck
and could not be extricated, perished in
the flames. There were about 200 pas
sengers. It is estimated that 40 persons
were killed and as many more bruised,
scalded and burned, of whom many are
likely to die.

ONE OF TWO WAYS,
The bladder was ereated for one pur
pose, namely, a receptacle for the urine,
and as such it is notliable to any form of
disease except by one of two ways. The
first way is from imperfect action of the
kidreys. The second way is from care
less local treatment of other diseases.
CHIEF CAUSE.
Unhealthy urine from unhbealthy kid
neys is the chief cause of bladder troub
les. So the womb, like the bladder, was
created for cne purpose, and if not doc
‘tored too much is not liable to weakness
or disease, except in rare cases. It is
situated back of angd very close to the
bladder, therefore aiy pain, disease or
inconvenience manifested in the kidneys,
back, bladder or urinary passage is often,
by mistake, attributed to female weak
ness or womb trouble of some sort. The
error is easily made and may be as easi
ly avoided. To find out correctly set
your urine aside for twenty-four hours;
a sediment or settlicg indicates kidney
or bladder trouble, The mild and extra
ordinary effect of Dr. Gilmer’s Swamp-
Root, the great kidney and bladder rem
edy, is soou realized. If you need a
