was indebted to him for a certain
amount,
The negro was carried before Ben
Williams, a brother-in-law of Eberhary,
who “was a justice of the peace, and
under the threat of prosecution Eber
hart made Sims agree to work on his
farm for a period of "years to liquidate
the alleged debs. Sims was compelled
to enter into a contract with Eberhart
to place his five minor children, Wey
man, Ned, Sara, Ophelia and Richard,
respectively 11,9, 6,4 and 2 years, at
work upon his farm until they become
of age.
~_ Eberbart, it is further alleged, beat
Sims unmercifully, bruising, wound
ing and otherwise maltreativg him.
[n the second count he is charged
with having illegally arrested Phillis
Johnson. He charged the Johnson wo
man with baving taken from his employ
her children, whom he told her had
been bound over to him unuil they
were 21 years of age by her husband,
who owed him a large sum of money.
He compelled the Johnson woman to
work on his farm for two years, met
ing out to her the same treatment ac
corded the other negroes under him.
The next count charges that on .Jan
uary 10ch, Charles Calloway, who had
formerly been 1n the employ of Eber
hart, was arrested by him, having pre-

clothing and hand-cuffed him with an
other negro, Orange Neilly by name.
Neilly was confined to bed from sick
ness caused by Eperhart’s inhuman
treatment and Calloway was thereby
obliged to remain with him. Calloway
was also forced to pinion his young
son, Robert, to the ground while
Eberhart brutally chastised him. J'he
tboy, it 1s alleged. was beaten un
!til blood gusued from his body and was
| made a cripple by the heavy blows he
| received.
\ Calloway, it is charged, was made to
‘apprentice his three minor children,
ltwo of whom were infants, until they
i should become of age.
[ The fourth count charges him with
| the illegal arrest of Arthur Neeley,
j colored, aged 16.
| The fifth and last count charges him
' with the arrest of John Robinson in
| August, 1897, on a false charge com
| pelling him to agree to work for him
| for three years, Robinsson was beaten
| with a leather strap and other harsh
| punishment was inflicted upon him,
i Eberhart bas given nhimseif up and
| was placed under a $5.000 bond. His
| case will probably be tried at the Oc.

tion of bitmetallism. Mr. Bryan was
cheered to the echo when he was intro
duced. He read a bulletin which had
