‘ A BATTE WITH INDIANS.
Bloody One Was Fought Near Daw
i son Just Sixty-Two Years Ago.
I Sixty-two years ago, on the Echowa
i notchaway swamp, five miles of where
Dawson now stands, 'on the old road
leading to the farm once owned by Mr.
Horsley and in a mile or two of Mr.
Martin Harp’s old homestead, a bloody
battle with the Indians was fought,
The few settiers then here were startled
by the crack of the rifle and the roar of
the old regulation musket then used by
the American soldiers, The fight
cormmenced at sunrise and was kept up
till half past one o’clock, wkhen the In
diaps escaped on their way to Florida.
General Wellborn and Captain Jernigan
commanded the soldiers. Captain Moye,
whose people now give tone and
character to the people of Randolph
county, took an active part in the fighi.
Skirmishing had commenced with the
Indians the Monday before, and all over
the locality the settlers contested every
foot of ground. We lost six in killed
and twenty infwounded. The loss of the
Indians was large, ani after the battle
eighteen of them were found dead in a
pond on the place of Mr, Harp. The
home of Captain Stapleton was open
to the care of the wounded, a name then
as now, synonymns of all that is
generous and patriotic.
A ROMANTIC MARRIAGE.
Cupid Wina Another Victory Over Parene
tal Objection.
Mr. Clifford C. Ruberts and Miss Em
mie L. Gammage were married Tuesday
of last week under romantic ci.cum
stances. They were to have been mar
ried the Sunday before, but on Saturday
the parents of both parties learned of
their intentions and prevented it, the
objection being their youthfulness
Love, as usual, found a way, however,
and Tuesday, escaping parental watch
fulness, they managed to meet and
drove to the home of Judge W. .
Crawford in the Twelfth district, where
their union was soon effected.
The bride is @« daughter of Mr. J. W.
Gammage, and possesses many bright
and. lovable attractions,while the groom,
a son of Mr. 8. H. Roberts, is an ener
getic young farmer admired for his ex
cellent traits of character.
We wish for them success and happi
ness throagh hife. .
Killed His Wife.
Will Thornton, a former Dawson ne
gro who was employed on the (:wy's}
street force for some time, is 1n the
Sumter county jail charged with Kkill- {
ing his wife in Americus Sunday.
The reports of the affair say that the
negro and his wife had beern engaged
in a hand-to hand combat for quite a
while, slashing and bruising each oth-= .
er considerably when the woman turn
ed and fled with the enraged husband
close behind her. After running a
short distance she lost her footing and
fell in a ditch, the fall breaking her
veck and killing her instantly., After
the woman had fallen Thornton satis
fied his anger by throwing stones at
her body. The remains of the
woman was brought to Dawson for
burial Monday.
Remarkable Rescue.
Mrs. Michael Curtain, Plainfield, 111.,
makes the statement that she caught
cold, which settled on her lungs; she
was treated for a month by her family
physician, but grew worse. He told her
she was a hopeless victim of consump
tion and that no medicine could cure
‘her. Her druggist suggested Ir. King’s
New Discovery for Cousumption; she
boaght a bottle and to her delight found
herself benefitted from first dose. She
continued its use and after taking six
bottles found herself sound and well;
now does her own bousewoik, and is as
