PERRY DAVIS’
STEYENS MAKES A SAVING,
The New Commissioner Cats Down the
Tag Bill $4,000.
ATLANTA, Nov. 12.—Commissioner
of Agriculture Stevens closed a contract
today for tags by which he saves $4,000
to the taxpayers of Georgia,
~ This Item brings to mind the late in
vestigation of the agricultural uepart
ment by the Blalock committee, at
which time it was developed that the
price vaid for tags was 45 cents per
1,000, and according to their investiga
tion these might have been had at 34
cents,
Today Mr. Stevens has demonstiated
what has been said about the business
method of this department under the
new regime by closing a contract for
tags at 31 cents, 3 cents under the low
est price given out by the Blalock com
mittee and 14 cents under that paid by
his predecessor,
This makes a net saving of $4,000 to
the taxpayers of Georgia. In other
words, by one aci Commissioner Stevens
has made his salary for two yeara.
Assistant Commissioner R. F. Wright
was sworn in and took charge of his
branch of the service today. He is one
of the most competent men in the state
and his popularity seems to grow daily.
Mr. Wright secmed at home when seen
at his desk, and acted like an old hand
at the business.

WHAT 'HE DISPENSARY HAS DONE.
’ Reduced Taxes $2,00 Per sl,ooo,and Con
l sumption of Whiskey 40 Per Cent.
. From a member of the board of com
missioners THE NEws has learned some
interesting facts connected with the dis
pensary.
By reason of its earnings the people of
the county will pay $2.00 per $l,OOO less
taxes this year than they otherwise
would bave had to pay; the consumption
of liquor in the county has been reduced
l at least 40 per cent; the whiskey sold is
absolutely pure, asitis shipped direct
from bonded warehouses and distilleries,
which prevents any possible chance of
its being adulterated; no whiskey below
80 proof is sold, while before the dispen
sary was established much of itaslow
‘as 60 proof was sold to the people.
The affairs of the dispensary have
been most excellent managed in every
respect, and it has proved very beneficial
in both a woral and financial way,
