At 4 o’clock Thursday morning the
peopla of the city were aroused by an
enelgetic s>unding of the fire alarm.
The big blaza that was seen toward
the east proved, however, not % be in
the city, but ten miles distant near the
Lee county line.
It was the gin house on the farm of
Mr. J. A. Shields that was burning, and
it, together with 8 bales ot cotton, two
thousand busbels of cotton sezd, all the
gin machinery and a two-horse wagon,
Wwas completely swept away by the
flames.
Mr. Shields says the fire was of incendi
ary origin, but he has no clue as to who
the guilty parties are.
He estimates his loss at $B5O, and had
no insurance,

DEATH OF A MINISTER.
Rev. G. R. Pournelle, Pastor of the Dover
Circuit, Succumbs to Consuwe ption.
Rev. Geo. R. Pournelle, a member of
the South Georgia Conference, and pas~
tor of the Dover circuit, died at Dover
Saturday evening at 6 o'clock.
Mr. Pournelle was well known by onr
older citizens, as he spent his early life
in Dawson.§fAs a boy and young man
he was popular and always gatherea
friends about him, and after he was
converted and joined the church and
enteved the minisiry he carried the same
winniog ways and h gh enthusiasm ioto
his work for God and the church,
He has been deservedly beloved on
every charge ne has served since enter
ing the conference., This was his first
vear on the Dover circuit, and be was
doing a fine work until his health failed
about four months ago. Since that time
he has been confined almost constantly
to his home. He was sunny-faced and
clheery to the last, asd expressed fre
quently a perfect readiness to depart.
He leaves a wife and five children and
alarge circle of friends to mourn his
death., 'l'he fuperal service occurred at
the Dover church Monday at noon and
the burial at the city cemetery at |3
o’cl ck in the afternoon. Rev. I. F.
Griffith of Shellman ¢ nducted the ser
vices.
Mr. Pournelle was a brother to Mrs.
B. McDonald of Dawson.

Death of a Little Girl,
The home of Mr. and Mrs., W. H.
Miller, who reside several miles east of
the city, was saddened las: Saturday by
the death of Alla, their little six-year
old daughter. Alla was a bright and
sweet little girl and her death was a
sad a blow to her fond parents, to ¥hom
many friends extend condolence in their
bereavement,

Presiding Elder McGehee Calls Officers of
Several Churches to Mest Here.
The fourth quarterly conference for
Dawson wili be held Monday night, No
vember 28th. :
The stewards of Capers, McLain, New
Hope, Dover and New Prospect will
meet in Dawson Tuesday, 29th, 10 a. m.,
at the Methodis% church. The object of
these conferences is to wind up the af
fairs of 1898 and confer for 1899.
Every official should take time to at
tend to this important work and arrange
to be on hand.
The present is both a crisis and a test
of loyalty and manhood. While our
people are pressed they love the church,
and wili respond if wisely, lovingly, per~
sistently urged.

HIGGINS SHOT HUCKABY.
Former Citizen of Parrott Assauited at
Windsor During as Entertainment.
The following special to the Atlanta
Constitution tells of the shooting of
a former citizen of this county. Pro
fessor Huckaby was at one time a resi
dent of Parrott, and is well known
by many readers of Tue News: |
LoGANsviLLE, GaA., Nov. 12 —News
his just been brought here of tha
shooting of Professor Huckaby by Jim
Higgins at Windsor las¢ night. Huck
aby was shot in the back, and his left
sid= is paralyzed, His condition is
very serious, Huckaby 1s a traveling
showmen and performed at Windsor
last night. During the performance
Higgins became involyed in a quarrel
which the showman tried to settle.
His interference made Higgins angry
and be deliberately shot Huckaby. He
was drunk but managed to escape.
