rior court, a daguerreotype ¢t a little
white girl five or six years old in a gold
trame, a big brass key and a bunch of
smaller keys.
Thisis the fifth time Hill has been in
jail for stealing, The evidence against
him now is conclusive, and he will
loubtless serve a long term in the gang
before he gains his freedom.

Mr. J. M. Chambers left for his home
in northern Mississippi Monday after
spending several weeks with his mother
and brother, Mr, G, M, Chambers, near
Graves Station.
Mr. Chambers left Mississippi for
Georgia in December, and he says that
at that time there were thousands of
acres of cottor. in his section from which

ments Companies Will Vote for Major,
An election will be held today fora
major of the Fourth Georgia regiment to
fill the vacancy caused by the promotion
of Major W, E, Wooten to the coloneley
of the regiment, The election wil] be
by ballot, and only the commissioned
officers of the vari us companies com
posing the regiment are entitled to vote,
There are three candidates for the
place, Capt..in Morris of the Ft. Gaines
Guards, Captain Cox of one of the Al
bany companies, and Captain Dart of the
Brunswick company.
Captain F* W, Clark of tae Dawson
Guards, was urged to become a candi
date, but declined to do s, He is one of
the most popular, caple and enthusiastie
military men of the regiment, and had
he consented to the use of his name he
would have received a very strong sup

MR. THRASH RETURNS,
He Is Again Connected With the
Publication of the Dispatch,
Mr. T. B. Thrash, whose departure
trom the city was noted in last week’s
NEws, has returned and is again con
nected with the Dispatch, He left
Dawson; for reasons of a business na~
ture which were later satigfactorily ar
ranged and he is now here to stay. |
His departure from the city was pub-i
lished as a matter of news, and without
intention of doing him any injustice.

Commissioner Stevens Serves a ‘“Varmint”
in the State Hounse,
A 'possum dinner was given by Com
missioner of Agriculture Stevens at the
capitol Saturday afternoon to a number
of his friends in the state house, and a
large south Georgia 'possum, which had
been permitted to fatten in the bases
ment for the past week, ‘was laid before
the guests of the agricultural depart
ment. The feas. was prepared by Uncle
Henry, an inseperable attache of the de
partment,who is thoroughly familiar with
all the intricacies of the art connected
with the cooking of a south Georgia
'possum,
The 'possum was a presant to the
commissioner from some of his friands
in the southern part of the state, who
forwarded the animal uniquely dressed
in red, white and blue in a box lined

Mr. Ivey Melton, who is attending
Bethel college at Cuthbert, was at home
Saturday and Sunday. He was ac
companied by a friend, Mr. Donaldson.
Mr. J. C. Savage came up from Alapa
ha Thursday to make the acquaintance
of a young man who becams a member
of his family the night before.
Mr, John Jordan of Georgetown has
been in the city several days visiting his
brother and sister, Mr. E. T Jordan and
Mrs. T. H. Thurmond.
Miss Lillie May Roberts has returned
from Griffin, where she spent several
weeks with the family of her uncle,
H#n. O. B. Stevens.
Miss Ola Mabry has returned to her
home in Eufaula after a visit of seyeral
days to the family of her uncle, Mr,
Dan Mabry.
Mr. W. A, Meicer will leave for In
dianapclis, Ind., tomorrow on a business
trip. He may decide to locate in that
city.
Rev. Dr. W, N. Reeves was in the city
Saturday and Sunday. He was enroute
from Fitzgerald to his home in Kufaula.
Mr. W, T, Herrington has returned to
his home at Ft. Gaines after spending
several days with Dr. J, L. Adams.
Mr. J. W. Tilly, the urbane and popu
lar merchant of Parrott, was a promi
nent visitor to Dawson Monday.
mr. D. J. Ray, a promiuent citizer of
Atlanta, was with Dawson relatives and
friends Thursday and Friday.
mr. W A. Anthouny, one of Sasser's
clever eitizens, transacted business in
Dawson Monday.
Mr. R. B, McLain is on a two weeks’

BroNwooOD, February 28.--A large
crowd attended the spelling bee av the
opera house Friday night. Miss Lizzie
Ragan and Mr. J. H. Ellerbee chose
sides, and after twelve had been
taken on each side Professor M.
W. Bargeron began giving out
the words. One by ene the spellers
came off of the stage until there
was but one left on each side. Judge
J.C. Avera was holding high the col
ors of Miss Ragan’s little army, while
Mr. E'lerbee was bearing his own col
ors with equal defiacce. On and on
they battled until ‘‘measles” got into
their camp. Mr. Ellerbee did nos
‘handle them right, ard he and his col
ors went down. Judge Avera took
“‘measles,”” and knowing what to do
with them won the battle of the even
ing for Miss Lizzie Ragan’s side. Af
ter the spelling bee several of the
young ladies entertained the crowd
‘with recitations, which were rendered
with credit.
On Thursday night Dr. T. A. Chap
pell and Messrs, C. W, Gunnels and J.
H. Ellerbee had some harness stolen
from them. Our wide-awake sheriff,
Mr. David Christie, was notified Fri
day morning, and on Saturday morn
ing he turned over the harvess
to the owners and turned the

On Wednesday night, at the Metho
dist church, Mr. Dan sShackleford and
Miss Annie Sessious plighted their

again.
Miss Fannie Lawhon has been confin
ed to her room for six weeks with the
grippe. We hope to see her out again
in a few days.
Mis. Robert Sale, one of Dawson's
thandsome and accomplished ladies,
spent Saturday with ber aunt, Mrs. C.
. Gunnels.
Miss Ollie Lawhon, the pretty and ac

visited in town Saturday and Sunday.
