fighting at Batougas for two days
‘u.force of nearly 17000 insurgents, and
‘at last aceounts they had not been able
to dislodge them from their position
on the mountainside.
Our companies are reduced by de
tails, discharges, ete., until we cannot
turn out more than fifty men tO the
company, and it is nothing but the
cowardice and poor markmanship of
the enemy that we have to thank™ for
our safety. Several towns near here
have been attacked by insurgents res
cently, but they have always been
driven off with great loss, notwith
standing the difference in numbers.
We have not been troubled here yet
although we are constantly hearing of
threatened attacks. However, this is
the least source of annoyance, as our
wagon escorts and other details pass
ing from one town to another are often
attacked by the enemy from ambush,
making it necessary to send heavy es
corts wheuever it is necessary to send
from one place to another for supplics,
mail, ete. 4

DOMESTICS.
We were never as well stocked in Domestics as now. Al

of our men dead and three wounded,
besides there were four horses and one
mule killed. It was a sad sight. The
insurgents had ambushed them, firing
at close range. Three of our men had
become separated from the main party
and we found one man and one wound
ed holding off a large number of the
enemy; the third was dead. The
wounded man had one leg broken and
the other badly wounded; also had
his gun broken at the stock by a rifle
ball. but erawled over to the dead man,
obtained his rifle, and was blazing
away to the best of his ability.
The roads are getting almost impass
able from excessive raivs, which makes
it doubly hard on our men. While it
is very deplorable to loose even oune of
our men as, in my opinion, one of them
is worth the whole Filipino race, it is
somewhat consoling to know that we
have averaged 25 to 50 insurgents to

Spinners Do Not Look for Normal Conditions

A Manchester dispatch says : Thir

normal conditions of trade will not re
