A MOXOPOLY'S MINTAKE
UL . UAE RS °
A TRUST MAGNATE DISCOUR
TEOUS TO MR. BRYAN.
Lost His Temper When Requested
to Permit the Democratic Lead
er’'s Car to Be Pulled by
Regular Train.
-
1t is stated that Mr. H. H. Rogers,
the president of the Standard Oil Com
pany, refused to permit Mr. Bryan’s
private car tobe attached to a regular
train from Parkersburg to Wheeling,
on the Ohio River Railroad, on last
Thursday night. The request was
made by National Committeeman Mec-
Graw. It wassuch a request as would
not have been refused to any railroad
man in the country.
- The refusual is construed as ind
cating an intention on the part of the
Standard Oil Company not toshow any
courtesies to Mr Bryan. No doubt the
feeling entertained for him by every
trust in the .country is the same as
that of the Standard Oil Company.
The great monopoly could have made
no greater mistake than it did in re
fusing the slight courtesy asked for
Mr. Bryan. The refusal did not annoy
Mr. Bryan in the least. In fact, it is
said he was rather amused at it. It
was the opinion of many of those pres
ent that the incident would make
thousands of votes for the democratic
candidate, because it clearly indicated
the side on which the trustsare in this
csmpaign. They are on the side of
Mr. MecKinley. Itis safe to say that a
similar request from a national com
mitteeman of the republican party for
Mr. MeKinley would be instantly
granted. -
In his Wheeling speech Mr. Bryan
took strong grounds against trusts.
:_Hu stated the remedy he would apply
if the opportunity to do so should come
to him. Let Congress provide, he
said, that. whenever any corporation,
organized in any state, wants to do
business outside of that state it must
£0 to the federal government and get
a license. But, it must comply with
the laws of each state in which it does
business. Mr. Bryan {urthersaid that
he would squeeze all of the water
out of the stock of every trust so that
the people would not be taxed to pay
diyidends on watered stock.
No doubt it is the strong position
that Mr. Bryan is taking against trusss
that caused the standard Oil president
to refuse to extend any courtesies to
him, If the oil magnate had the (hing[
10 do over agaia it is probable that he
would be governed by his judgewment,
rather than his temper. |

Fernandina Turns Out With a Brass Band’

Quite a demonstration occurred at

arrival of the Brunswick boat, the oc

a three months’ sojourn in his native
| land, of the Spanish consul, Signor S.

i A large delegation of prominent cit
[izens, headed by Mayor Jetfreys, and
escorted by a brass band, playing na
tional airs, met him at the wharf, and
gaily decorated carriages conveved the

impromptu reciprocal felicities were}
exchanged. One of the most conspic
uous features was that of the ba.nd’s‘

mediately starting up America as soon \
as Signor Carrio touched his foot on
shore, Signor Carrio has endeared

Many Extra Ladies.
The census of New York city shows
that there are in that citya greater
number of women than men, the sur
plus or ‘‘extra’ ladies amounting in
round numbers to something like 25.000.
However, since it would be extremely
difficult to ascertain who these “‘extra’
ladies are, the probabilities are that
the disclosure will not make any dif
ference to the bachelors,

FIGHT AGAINST COTTON.
More Radical Measures Talked of
by British Spinners.
A press dispatch says there was a
large attendance in Manchester Satur
day at the meeting of the cotton spin
ners, which unanimously passed reso
lutions to purchase no American spot
cotton during September. Only three
of those present opposed the action,
and they on the ground that the reso
lution was not strong enough. It was
resolved to meet again on September
21st to take more drastic measures if
necessary. The attension of the meet
ing was directed to the heavy buying
of American spot cotton during the
last two or three days, suggesting that
members of the emergency committee
had used their knowledge of the pro
posed movement against the brokers
to provide themselves with cotton.
The operatives will suffer by the ac
tion taken, as the amount of cotton on
hand will not supply the mills for a full
fortnight, except a few firms which
are provided with a whole stock. Liv
erpool’s stock is about 150,000 bales,
compared with 500,000 balss for the
corresponding time of 1899.
‘ DEMOCRATIC PROSPECTS.
Taggart of Indiana Says They Are Bright
All Over the West,
The Chattanooga News has received
a letter from Hon. Thomas Taggart,
mayor of Indianapolis, in which he
says: _
“The political situation in the mid
dle west is very bright, particularly in
Indiana, Ohio, Michigan, Minnesota
and Wisconsin.
The condition in our state never
looked better for victory. Thedemoc
racy is united to a man ; nine-tenths of
the gold democrats, who voted for Mec-
Kinley in 1896, are with us this year
and we have a large number of allies
from people opposed to imperialism.”

MULCTING THE FARMERS.
A Trust Will Squeeze $7,000,000 from
Kansas Grangers,
The Kansas farmers have good crops
this year, but they are forced by a
trust which will prevent them from
getting the best returns from their
grath. Four hundred grain dealers of
the state, it is said, have entered into
a combination and agreed upon a
schedule of prices to be paid for corn
and wheat. If a farmer undertakes to
market his crop independently no firm
in either Kansas or Kansas City will
dare to do business with him. Tt is es
timated that the farmers of Kansas
will be mulcted for not less than $7,-
000,000 by the squeeze which the gra'n
men propose to put on them. The ob
ject lesson in trusts will probably have
the effect of decreasing the vote for
Mc¢Kinley, who is looked upon as the
champion of trusts,
