A GRETNA GREEN AFFAIR.
Two Well-Known Young People
Married in Dawson Saturday.
Judge J. W. Peddy united in mar
riage Miss Lizzie Brauner and Mr.
Douglass Bridges Saturday evening at
6: 30 o’clock, at his home in this city.
The wedding was a Gretna Green af
fair. No idea of their intentions was
given by the young people to their
elders, but, getting into a buggy at
Chickasawhatchee, their houie, they
drove to Dawson, where they were
married without the knowledge of any
of their relatives.
The bride is the daughter of Mr. J.
P. Brauner of Chickasawhatchee, one
of this county’s most substantial plant
ers and prominent citizens, and is
greatly admired by all who know her.
The groom is the son of Mr. F. M.
Bridges of this county, and has many
friends. THE NEWS joins with the
friends of the couple in extending best
wishes.

HINDER MURDER CASE.
It Will Be Taken up Again on
the First Monday in March.
The Minder murder case, which has
attracted so much attention by reason
of its several sensational features, wil!
be taken up again in Bibb superior
court on the first Monday in March.
Minder seems to have entirely recov
ered from the seventeen self-inflict
‘ed knife wounds, and there is now no
apparent reason why he will not be
ready for trial at the time set.

no help; but her cure is complete and
her health is excellent.”” This shows
what thousands have proved—that

proved that Holmes was accidently
shot and the prisoner was released.

Mr. B. F. Cleveland has gone to At

when a dispute arose between them as

A BRASS BAND.
A Movement On Foot to Organize
One In Dawson.
There is a movement on foot in Daw
son toorganize a brass band. To do
this it is necessary to raise about $l5O
to be expeaded in the purchase ofin
struments. A good band falls oniy
just a little short of a necessity, and
the citizens of Dawson would be aid
ing a good cause to subscribe the de
sired amount.

CAN'T PAY OUT.
Dud Mims Sentenced to Chain
gang for Twelve T[lonths.
Judge Crisp Presided.
The monthly and adjourned quarterly
term of the city court convened Monday
morning with Judge Charles F. Crisp
of Americus presiding for Judge Parks
in disqualified cases.
One of the first cases disposed uf was
that of the state against Dud Mims,
the white boy who was arrested re
cently for stealing goods from the
Central depot. The jury returned a
verdict of guilty, and Mims was sen
tenced: to vhe chaingang for twelve
months without the privilege of pay
ing out.
In passing sentence upon the young
prisoner Judge Crisp remarked upon
the need of a state reformatory for
young criminals, stating that such an
institution was the place for a boy like
the one who had just been convicted.
A number of defendants, both white
and colored, who were chargzed with
gaming, and a negro for carrying con
cealed weapons, were also sentenced by
Judge Crisp, the fines ranging from
$2O to $4O each.
Judge Crisp returned home Monday
night. He disposed of the business of
the court with dispatch and impartiali
ty, and made an exceedingly favorable
impression upon both the public and
the bar,
Judgé Parks took up the business
of the court after Judge Crisp left the
bench, and after hearing several mo
tions adjurned the court until the
fourth Monday in March, All the
jurors will return at the March
adjourned term.

l MEMORIAL DAY ORATOR.
Time Some Action Was Taken in Regard
to Securing a Speaker.
The ladies of the Memorial Asso
ciation will probably meet in the
course of a week or two to consider
the arrangement of a program and for
the purpose of securing a speaker for
April 26.
The earlier this meeting is held the
better will it be. Other towns have
already secured memorial day orators, |
and if the ladies of the association
here postpone their meeting for thisj
purpose too long good speakers for the
occasion will be hard to get. |
Loss of Appetite,
A person that has lost appetite has
lost something besides—vitality, vigor,
tone.
The way to recover appetite and all
that goes with it is to take Hood's
Sarsaparilla—that strengthens the
stomach, perfects digestion and makes
eating a pleasure.
Thousands take it for spring loss of
appetite, and everybody says there'’s
nothing else so good as Hood’s.

‘ FRANKLIN IS FREE.
Negro Who Compelled His Wife
to Kill Child Back in Dawson. -
Ben Franklin, the Columbus negro
who was arrested in Dawson some
weeks ago on the charge of compelling
his wife tokill her child, is again in
the city after a temporary abode in the
Muscogee county jail.
Its seems that the only wit
ness to the crime was his wife, and
under the law she was not permitted
to testify against him. The solicitor
‘general did not, for this reason, even
‘present the case to the grand jury,
‘and the negro was discharged.
He returned to Dawson immediately
after being given his liberty.

COTTON IS DAMAGED.
Staple Laid by for Better Price
Is Greatly Injured.
Much of the cotton marketed in
Dawson recently has been found to
have been greatly damaged by ex
posuce to the weather. It is estimated
‘that the loss from this cause will be
considerable.
Hundreds of bales have been left un
covered in rain and mud the entire
season, with the result that the bag
ging and a considerable portion of the
cotton has rotted. Farmers who held
for higher prices and: failed to have
their cotton properly stored will be
heavy losers.
Has Sunk One Well,
Mr. John E. Cole., who has a contract
with a number of Terrell county farm
ers to bore artesian wells on their
places, has succeeded in obtaining wa
ter on Messis. W. H. and J. H. Davis’
farm several miles south of Dawson.
The water was reached at a depth of
265 feet and comes to within twenuy-six
feet of the surface. This is the first
well of the several which Mr. Cole
will sink in this county. Though suec
cessful in the boring of this one, he
hopes to be more so in his work on
some of the others and obtain flows.
