TERRELL STANDS NEAR THE KEAD.
Though Small in Area It Is the Fourth County in the Number of
Bales of Cotton Produced. Some Interesting
Figures Givea by the Cesus Bureau.
The bulletin just issued by the cen
sus bureau with reference to cotton
growing in the United States contains
some very interesting figures as to
Georgia. It'shows that for the year
1899 this state produced 1,296,844 com*
mercial balestof cotton, of which 57,812
were sea island or long staple. The
bulletin also shows that the round bale
is growing in popularity in Georgia,
and that of the 1899 crop 18,915 round
bales were packed and shipped in thisi
state. i
But perhaps the most interesting
feature of the bulletin is that which!
showsithe standing of every county in
the state in the matter of cotton pro
duction. |
Terrell, though one of the smallest
in area of any of the counuies of Geor
gia, stands fourth as to the number of
bales of cotton produced. There are
but five counties which raise more
tham 25,000 bales, and of these Burke
leads with a total of 46,152 bales. The
other four are Washington with 29,-
544 bales, Carroll with 28,504, Terrell
with 25,719, and Sumter with 25,564,
There are seven others which produce
more than 20,000 each, these being
Coweta, Harris, Henry, Houston, Jack
son, Jefferson, Laurens, Meriwether
and Troup.
