©Over Two Hundred Pupils Is the Record
for Opening Day This Term. Work Be
gan Regularly and Systematically.
Never in the history of the Dawson
public schools did a session begin onder
more auspicious circumstances thanon
Monday mozning, when over two huvn
dred white papils appeared at the his
toricsold college building and an
nounced ‘‘ready.”
At 9 o'clock a NEWS reporier visited
the school and found the following en
rollment in the three deparimerts:
primary 79, intermediate 53, gram
mar 69, and was told thatseveral mo.e
would probably enter daring the day,
to say' nothinz of those who will be |
coming in by degrees as the term pro-‘
gresses. ‘
That the well-deserved popoterity of 1
Dawson's publie school systea is not!‘
confined to Dawson itsef is atiested
by the fact that pupils are in ateend
ance from many odher towns. sone of
them beipg from other states.
The great majority of the pup’ls,
while having enjoyed the'r vacation,
made longer than usual on account o*
the temporavy prevalence of scarlet
fever, appear never.neless o'ad toonce
azain begin their work oa the faniliar
old hill.
Professor Hankins is assisted by as
able a corps ot teacne.ss as has ever
taught in Dawson, and there appears
no reason way the school should not
maintain its proverbial success as an
edurational iaostitution.
A SAD DEATH.
A Florida Lady Passes Away
. in Bronwood.
On the Gth instant a very sad death
occurre |in our little town. It was
that of Mrs. Luev Kersey, wife of Mr
E Kirsey of Istachauta, Fla. For
more than a year Mrs, Kersey and
. hildren have been here for school and
sanitary advantages, which were limit
ed in their Florida home. Mrs. Kersey
was @4 yery quiet, unostentatious lady.
Toose who knew her best loved her
most. But the health she coveted was
never regained, and despite the etforts
of family, friends and physicians death
trinmphed, the mother’s beart ceascd
to beat and the babe of a few days
slept tranquilly near pitifully uncon
scious of its snrrowfulflloss.‘ Lo
Mps. Kersey was a davghter of Mr.
Henry Tucker, formerlv of thiscounty.
She leaves a heart-broken mother, a
devoted husband, five children and
relatives and friends who grieve for
her departure. She wus thirty-two
years old.
Oh. so young to die, and when most
needed by her loved ones here! -
The interment was on Saturday.
Apypropriate remarks were made at the
cemetery by Rev. E. M. Whiting of

Mr. Frank Turner of Macon, who has

LET FARMERS SAVE THEIR HAY.
Sommizsissioner of Agriculture Says This
Is the Part of Wisdom.
The monthly bulleiin of the depart
ment of agricultuve contalvs siale
ments regarding the cordition of the
crops in Georgia and the care and cul
tivation of certain producis, besides
much information of interest to all far
mees ard others concerred in the pro
duocts of the farm.
Commissioner of Agriculture Stev
cns devoted a large space to a talk to
the farmers oa crop counditions. He
especially urges the farme.s to save all
the hay possible ffom their lands. The
object of this, says the conmissioner,
is becavse the recent dirought in the
wsstern states, where much of the hay
vsed to feed stock in the southern
states durirz the winter comes from,
has reduced the hay product of the
west greatly, and it is probab’e bay
will be sold during the winter on the
lGeorgia. market at as much. as 325 per
ron.

Modern ideas demand higher educa
tion, especially for boys. The vigor
ous intellectual and spiritual life, the
college spirit and enthusiasm among
the students, and the enlarged endow
ment and increased facilities of Mercer
University at Macon, Ga., make this
institution one of the foremost in the
South. The cost of the course i 3 very
reasonable, while location. climate and
surroundings are of the best. The
President is a believer in modern en
terprise, and the resulting improve
ments are shown very clearly by the
catalogue. which will be sent by Pres
idezt P. D. Pollock, Macon, Ga., cnre
quest, giving very full information
about the Uniyersity. \
