Lieutenant-Colonel Says Former
One Was Not Valid.
Capt. H, A. Wilkinsoo, commanding
the Dawson Guards, company H., has
received notice from Lieuienant-Col
onel Hopkins of the Fouarth regiment
of Georgia volunteers that the Guaards
must bold avocher eleciion for second
lievtenant, and he has ordered it heid
tonight (Wednesddy.) :
In the election held on the night of
the 3)th inst. Sergeant E. R. Slade
received '7 votes and Lance (fox-[)()g-ztl
Rufus Jones 16. Colonel Hovkins
holds that Sergeant Slade received a
plorality but not a majority, and that
he was therefore not elected.
Sergeant Slade will probably be
unanimouvs’v elected tonight. Cor
poral Jones has declined to euter the
race agaiast him, and it is beiieyed he
will haye no other opposition.
Mrs. F. W. Clark’s fall and winter
millinery is arriving.
J. M. WHITE IN TROUBLE,
Charged With Stealing Horse and
Buggy from Albany Man.
J. M. White, who represents an es
tablishment for en'arging pictuvres ard
has made Dawson histheadquarters for
several months, is in trouble in A!-
bany. Flriday’s Aloany Hera'd con
tained the following account of his pee
ulations and arresi:
“A tall white man named J. M.
White hired a horse and buggy from
Livingston's stable last Thorsday, and
he has not yetreturned with the team.
“The man’s business is enlarging
pictures, and he hired the teem io
wreke some trips into the country
around Albary. He was fto use¢ the
team for several days, but was to bring
it back to the stables every night.
“But White has oot retvrned, as yet,
ard Mr. Livingston is 'now worrying
abeuat his horse and buggy, which he
belicves the man is attempting tosteal,
“Yesterday Mrv. Erpest Livingston
went to the man’s homein Dawsoa, but
could not find out anything as to his
whereabouts. He droye to Dawson with
the team, bot has lefi theve and no one
knows where he has gone.
“Poday Mr. Livingston is sending
oot ‘Stop Horse Thief’ rotices all over
this part of the couatry, and bhopes to
soon catch the thief and bring him to
justice.

Enjoyable Events That Have Occurred
the Past Week.
Mrs. J. R. Irwin entertained very
delightfully Thursday evening in hon
or of her sister, Miss Roxie Findley of
Macon. The occasion was al fresco,
and was one of much pleasure to all
who were present.

young people, scattered picturesquely

Stevens bas received a telegram from
the agricultral department at Wash
ington sayiog an effort wov'd be made
to send au expert to Georgia at once to
study the disease of anthracnose that
has appeaved in so many localities in
the cotton piants. Commissioner Stev
eps bas receiyed reports from six or
eight counties stating that this disease
was prevalent,.

’Judge Sheffield Had to Suppress

trial of the case of Mrs. Emma D. Vin
ing acainst the Cenural of Georgia‘
Railway Company,
This case arose over the killing of
Mrs. Vining’s husband, A. J. Vining,
wbo was an engineer in the employ of
the Central railroad. On November
24th, 1899, Mr. Vining was an engineer
of a freight train, At about 10 o’clock
on that day his train collided with
another f{reight train about a mile
east of Georgetown, and he and his
fireman were both killed,
Mrs. Viaing, through her attorneys,
Messrs Hoke Smith and H. C. Peeples
of Atlanta and Messrs. Hardeman, Da
vis & Turnerof Macon, brought suit
against the company, and the trial be- |
gan Monday. Mr. Hoke Smith, Mr.
C. AL Turper and Mr. William Harri
son appeaved for the plaintiff, while
W. D, Kiddoo of Cuothbert and W. C.
Worrill represented the defendant.
The court house was crowded when
Hoke Smith concluded the argument
for the plaintiff. About balf of those
preseni weve ladies and Judge Sheffield
foond it necessary during the argu
ment vo suppress the applause. The
jury was out but a short while and ren
dered a verdict for the plaintiff for
$13,000.

Fire at Pace’s Gin,
A small fire at Pace’s gin called out
the fire department about 11 o'clock
Monday morning. The flames were
fairly well under control before the ar
rival of the department, and the fire
laddies soon completed the work. The
damage was insignificant.
