PENSION APPROPRIATIONS,
A dispatch from Washington states
that $139,842,230 has been appropriated
for pension: by ceangress, $5,403,000 less
than the amoumt appropriated last

This action by congress is the ifirst
step in the right.lirection, and @t is to
be devoutedly hop:d that decreasing
pension appropriations wiil be fsatures
of the future sessions.

Scarcely a {day passes now that the
daily papers do not contain accouate of
some railway disaster in which lives
are lost, limbs breken, bodies scalded
and the like. It is necessarily in the
nature of things that some accidents
are bound 1o occur occasionally on the
railroads, but it ie not mecessary nor
reasonable that th2y should become
matters of almost daily occerence.

The farmers around here are not in
as good heart as they were a year ago,
as cotton has gone down and cvery
thing has gone beyound a poor man’s

DEATH OF MR. S. M. M'CLENDSEN.
Passed Away Several Days Ago After
a Lingering filness. _
On Wednesday, January 11. the angel
of death visited our earth and wok
from us Mr. S. M. MeLendon, who
‘had been contined to his bed some
time with consumption. He was a
young man only twenty-four years and
some months old.
Many homes were bright that beau
tiful New Year's day, but in that home
} all was dark and sad, for they knew it
‘would notbe long before they would
have to say good-bye to their loved one,
for he was surely sinking into his sleep
never to be awakened tiM the res
‘urrecmion day, when all shall stand
face to face with their Savior,
He was not heard to complain ‘while
‘on bea nor say “Oh, why do I have to
sufler s0?"’ but patiently bore all his
paios, thus veaching us by example not
to complain when it is the work of
God. A young wife, two small chil
dren. tive brothers and a sister, besides
a host of friends and relatives, survive
him. : .
He was buried at Hopewell Thurs
day, where his father, mother and
relatives were buried, Rcv. Saider

of the entire commomunity. and may
the blessings of God ever fall upon
them, and many they walk cloee to

popular young men in Dawson, both
in a business avd a sccial way, and his
business wiil doubtless be a large one.
Directors and Officers Re-Elected.
The stockholders of the Dawson
National Bank met yesterday and re
elecred the old board of directors, who
then re-elected Mr. A. J. Carver presi
dent, Mr. S. R. Christie vice-president
and Mr. M. M. Lowrey cashier.
Changes in Residence.
Mr. J. L. Janes has rented the resi
denee of Dr. 1.. €. Gonekee on Spone
wall street. and is occupying the same.
Dr. and Mrs. Gonekee have not yet
made any detinite arrangements,
though they will remain in Dawson.
