OFFICIAL PAPER OF CITY OF DAWSON.

HALF SHEET THIIS WEEK.
In order to give The News force
two or three days rest after a year of
constant and faivhful work we issue
only a half sheet this week. The only
rest our printers get is during the
holidays, and we feel that they deserve
this recreation. Next week The
News will appear in its usual form.
¢ THE COST OF THE LEGISLATURE.
According to a statement from the
treasury department the recent ses
sion of the legislature was the most
economical that has been held in Geor
gia in many years. Its expenses were
just $3,327.07 less than those of the
legislature of 1901. Assistant State
Treasurer Furlow has finished Lhe‘f
work of figuring up the cost of Lhe‘
session and paid the last bill. The
total cost was $67,208.48. while she
cost of the session of 1901 was $70,626.
T'he reason of the difference was
due largely to the change in the
status of committee bills, as the re
sult of a reselution that was passed by
the house providing vhat members of
sub-committees appoihted to visit
state institutions should charge only
actual expenses. Heretofore the limit
of expense allowed .to each of such
committeemen—s2o—has always been
collected whether the actual expenses
amounted to that or not. A notable
ipstance this year was in the visit of
the committee to the state sanitarium.
1n 1901 each member of this commit
tee collected $2O, or a total of $5OO or
wmore. This yearnot & member of the
committee was paid asything for ex
penses, 48 vhey traveled to Milledge
ville on passes, and were entertained
free while there. The coosequence
was none of the house members put in
the usual expense bill of $2O, and there
~as a saving of that much on this one
sommittee alone.
A DISCREDITABLE ACT.
Rt
The British and Germans do not
seem to be particularly proud of their
act in jsinking the Venezuelan war
vessels.
There are two stories about the
matter, both admitting that there was
po resistance o 0 the part of the Vene
suelans. According 10 the tirst story,
and this story is confirmed by special
dispatches to the New York Herald,
the yessels, immediately after their
capture, were towed to sea by the
Britisb and German launches and
there sunk. The Herald’s story is
that they were gcuttled. The effort
to make it appear that the vessel:
were of no ;account will, it is said, ut
terly fail. They were small, but thoy
were well fisted for the purpose icr
which they were used, namely, to pa
trol the coast Lo prevent swuzgling.
In their eagerness to éapture some
thing, to make a show of doing some
thing, the Germans and British com
mitted an act which was not credita
ble to them, and for which they are
pow trying to find an excuse, says the
Savanoah News. The Venezuelan
gunboats or warships, or whatever
they were. were practically bharmless.
There was no good reason for destroy
fag thew.

almost had heart failure.

DAWSON merchants are a unit in
saying that the holiday trade, just
ended, was exceptionally fine; the best
the city has enjoyed in a number of
years. Everybody seemed to have
some money to spend for Christmas,
and the spending was on a more liber
al scale than for a long time.

i'AN OLD SERVANT’S PLAINTIVE CALL.
Induces His old Employer to Take a Long
Journey to See Him.
I'rom the Macon Telegraph. |
Mr. A. H. Stephens of Leary, Ga..;
was in Macon yesterday on his way to
Milledeeville. He was going to thel
state lunatic asylum, in response to
the plea from an old negro servant
who wanted to see him. ]
Speaking of his trip Mr. Stephens |
gaid: :
‘“‘He was an old and faithful servant,
and when I had to take him to Milledge
ville it was a hard task for me. In his
lucid moments he has thought of the
Christmas time, and loneed to see me. |
[ could not resist his call, and I am
on my way to see the man aad give‘
him such comfort as I can.” |
Looking at him as he told of his
mission in a simple, unaffected man
ner the representative of The Tele
graph saw before him a man worth the
while. And the thought eame, how
many such men exist?
Mr. Stephens, who is named after
the great ‘‘commoner’ of Georgia,
was related to him.
MERCHANT MURDERED AT MATHEWS.
Mr. Ed Gay Goes to Store and Is Killed.
Safe Opened and Building Burned. l
MATHEWS, Ga., Dec. 26.—At a late
hour Christmas eve night an unknown
man called at the home of Mr. Kd Gay.
six miles from here, and asked him to
change a bill. Mr. Gay. not havieg
the change, walked with the man to
his store not far distant, where they
entered, and it is supposed the stran
ger then drew a revolver on Mr. Gay
and forced him toopen his safe, which
contained $1,200. He then probably
murdered Mr. Gay aod set lire to the
store to hide his ¢rime.
The store was completely gutted,
and yesterday the safe was found open
and vhe skull of Mr. Gay was found in
the ruins. The whole comwmunity is
in a high state of excitement. So far
there is no clue to the perpetrator of
the crime.

Two-thirds of the inmates of our hospitals are women. They are in most cases either for treatment
or for an operation, made necessary by advanced stages of female troubles which have resulted in ovaritis
a tumor, or displacement of the womb. - :
66 b/ ]
AN OPERATION NECESSARY.
How these words after the examination strike terror to a woman’s soul, and with what regrets she
hears them, when she considers that the operation has become necessary through her own neglect. Femalg
derangements cannot cure themselves, and neglecting the warnings of nature only means putting it off until
there is no cure. The woman who lets her trouble make headway pays the penalty of a dangerous opera
tion and a lifetime of impaired usefulness at the best, and the operation often proves fatal when her life
might have been saved by Lydia E. Pinkham’s Vegetable Compound.
When women are troubled with irregular, suppressed or painful menstru.
ation, weakness, leucorrheea, displacement or ulceration of the womb, that
bearing down feeling, inflammation of the ovaries, backache, bloating (or flatu
lence), general debility, indigestion and nervous prostration ; or are beset with
such symptoms as dizziness, faintness, lassitude, excitability, irritability, ner
vousness, sleeplessness, melancholy, and * want-to-be-left-alone’’ feelings, and
the blues, they should remember that there is one tried and never-failing
remedy; Lydia E. Pinkham’s Compound at once removes such troubles.
« Dear Mgs. Pinkmas:—l cannot tell you how much good you have done me and how thankful I
am to you for it. For five years I have not been free from pain for a day. I have had backaches, headaches,
and those awful dra.gging sensations with leucorrheea, and when menstraation appeared I was in such a
condition I could hardly sit up. I doctored all the time, but nothing helped me, and I was told that an
operation was necessary.
“Two months ago a friend suggested that I try Lydia E. Pinkham’s Vegetable Compound. No
one knows what it has done for me and how thankful Tam for it. It brought me the first well days I haye
had for five years. It did for me what doctors could not do,and I want every suffering woman to know
about it.” Lourse NAvUEr, 751 E. 166th St., New York City.
“«Drar Mrs. Pinkuay:— I wish to thank you for what Lydia E. Pinkham’s Vegetable Compound
has done for me. I had terrible hemorrhages, being lacerated from the birth of my child. The doctor told
me that if I would have an operation I would be well and strong. I submitted to it, but was worse than
before ;no one knows what I suffered. Finally a friend advised me to try your Vegetable Compound ; I did
so, and commenced to feel better; I continued its use, and it has done for me what doctors could not do. 1
am strong and well. If women with any kind of female troubles would only consult you before submitting
to an operation they would be spared many hours of pain and suffering. I cannot thank you enough for
what you have done for me.” Axxa Kircrrorr, 156 E. 100th St,, New York City. .
