rule.

pied the pulpitof the Methodist church

tions which ever filled that edifice
from the text in Joshna which reads,
sCpose YOU this day whom ye will
serve, but as for me and my house we
«ill serve the Lord.”’ Several hundred
geople were present, and standing

Io his sermon Mr. Jones again dis
cussed the dispensary in a caustic
style, and also proceeded to lambast
church members and people in general.
He left Dawson on the noon train
for Mississippl, where he went to fill
an engagement.
Mr. Jones hgd the striet attention of
the congregation throughout hie ser
mon. At tunes he was pathetic in his
remarks and at other times witty, and
again there were superb flights of elo
quence.
MR. HARRIS A DELEGATE.
Appointed by Governor to Good
Roads Convention.
Governor Terrell has appointed
pineteen delegates to the National
Good Roals Convention to meet in St.
Louis, Mo., on April 27. Among the
number is Hon. C. M. Harris of Herod.
Mr. Harris is an enthusiastic advocate
ofzood roads, and his appointment
was a very appropriate one.
The convention will be held under
the auspices of the good roads associa
tion of the country, national and inter
national, and has vhe endorsement of
the good roads department of the de
partment of agriculture at Washing
ton.
Besides Mr. Harris the other dele
gates pamed from this gection of the
state are John A. Cobb of Americus,
Jobn O. Perry of Newton and J. W.
Forrester of L.eesburg.

The Last of the Crop Has Been Sold, Bringing Nine and a Half
Cents. Nearly Twenty Thousand Bales Marketed in Dawson.
For the first time in several years
there is not a bale of unsold cotton in
Dawson.
On last Thursday Mr. A. L. Short,
the local representative of Andrea &
Co., bought seventy-five bales, the en
tire number remaining. in the several
warehouses of the city, and 94 cents
per pound was paid for all of it. The
cotton belonged to eeveral different
‘parties, who bad beld it some months
for a higher price.
\ The cotton season just closed -has

Geologist McCallie Has Randolph
People Excited.
News comes from over in Randolph
county that some of the people think
they have underground treasure, and
are going to look into it. 1
Mr. McCallie, an issistant in the state
geological department, has been to
Cuthbert and examined specimens of a
substance that looked like coal, found
on the farm of A. J. Moye. It is said
he pronounced the specimens a good
quality of bituminous coal.
Either Mr. McCallie or State Geolo
gist Yeates will visit Randolph county
again soon and extend the investiga
}t.ion.

been a fairly profitable one. The
farmers have received a good price for
the staple, and the receipts at Dawson |
have been very eatisfactory, consider
ing’the short crop that was made in
this section.
During the season there were
brought to Dawson by wagon and
marketed here 19,000 square bales and
1,173 round bales, making nearly
20,000 bales of the standard weight
of 500 pounds, the proceeds of
which were put into the channels of
trade.
INVITED BY HEARST.
Judge Griggs Asked to Join a
Party to Inspect Territories.
Congressman Griggs has been invit
ed by Wm. R. Hearst to go cn a trip
to the west with Mr. Hearst and other
congressmen and senators for the pur
pose of visiting the several territories
which are struggling to secure admis
sion as states of the union.
The trip will be a pleasant and im
portant one, and Judge Griggs will no
doubt accept the invitation.

SAYS IT IS ILLEGAL.
A Supreme Court Decision Closes
the Doors of the Arlington
Dispensary,
The supreme court has handed down
its decision in the Arlington dispen
sary case, with the facts of which read
ers of The News are already informed,
and the doors of the institution will
now have to be closed. The court
says:
' “A municipal corporation which has
‘under +its charter exclusive power to
‘control and direct’ the sale of liguors
within its limits has no authority, uo
der such a provision, to organize a
dispensary by appointing commission
ers and authorizing them to sell liguor
under certajin terms and conditions
prescribed in the ordinance. This is
especially true when the people of the
county wherein the dispensary is lecat-!
ed had, prior toits organization, adopt
ed the local option law, which forbids
the sale of liguors in that county.
“The illegal sale of intoxicating hq
uors is a public nuisance affecting the
whole community in which the sale is
carried on, and may be abated by pro
cess instituted in the name of the
state.”
This decision will have the effect of |
also closing the dispensaries at Leary
and Pelham, both of which are located
in counties that are dry under the lo
cal option law. ;
