CRATE FACTORY IS INCREASING ITS FORCE.
The Company Anticipates a Big Fruit Crop in This Section, and
Wilt Run Its Plant to the Fullest Capacity.
Strong hopes are now entertained
for a good peach crop in southwest
Georgia this season. Superintendent
Watkins of the Dawson Crate and
Box Works has informed a News rep
resentative that after a careful survey
of the fruit prospect experts connected
with the system of which the plan®
here is a part give it as their
opinion that a successful fruit year 13
KILLED A MAD DOG.
Mr. West Pace Shot Rabid Ca
nine. Other Dogs Bitten.
A great deal of excitement was caus
ed a few days ago by the appearance
of a mad dog on the place of Mr. Olin
Pace a few miles east of Dawson. Af
ter biting four other canines, the
rabid animal chased several negroes,
who found safety bv quickly getting
within doors.
Mr. West Paee, who had seen the
actions of the dog, speedily procured
a shotgun and killed it, as well as the
dogs bitten.
But for his timely action many
would doubtless have been attacked
by the dog, as there were a number
of negroes at work onthz farm at the
time.

almost certain for south Georgia. They
think, however, that the crop in the
northern section of the state was corcs
siderably damaged by the recent cold
weather.
The crate factory in Dawson, in ac
cordance with these predictions, is
gradually increasing its force, and by
June 1 the ninety hands now employed
will have probably been increased to
300.

Complaint About the Roads.
Ordinary Roberts says he is recelv
ing many complaints, both verbal and
through the mail, about the condition
of the public roads. The wet weather
since the first of January and the large
amount of hauling that has been done
by the farmers has caused the roads
to be in worse condition than they us
ually are. 2

|BIGGEST EVER KNOWN
!The Dry Goods Merchants of
l Dawson Did a Klondike Bus
iness Last Week.
The dry goods stores in Dawson,
which held their spring openings last
week, were ecenes of marvelous beauty
and wonderful activity, and the trade
whick began with the first display of
this season’s goods is continuing with
'marked briskness.
- The proprietors of these establish
‘ments are reviewing with satisfaction
the results of the week, and say that
pever before had they sold as manv‘
good= in the same number of days.
The beautiful fabrics and lines of
notions which were shown reflect great
eredit upon the buyers of some of the
most complete and up to date stocks in
the state. The trading public gener
ally seemed to have a knowledge of
the many beautiful things to be offer
ed, and besides the ladies of the city
and eounty throngs of visitors came
from adjoining counties and neighbor
ing towns.
The retail dry goods trade of Daw
son 1s in & prosperous condition. The |
traffic in this line of business was ney
er so large and satisfactory as now.
This isdue 1n a great measure to the
fact that there is lively competition in i
this trade among our local merchants
which causes them to buy only the!
very best quality of goods, which they !
sell at low and close prices. This con
dition of affairs attracts hundreds of
customers to Dawson.
Dawson’s merchants in all lines of
business are keeping step to the gen
eral development and progress of the
south. It is an excellent thing for
Dawson to have so many big stores.
They help the city, prosper the pro
prietors and benefit the patrons. ‘
